15 Meter USB 3.2-4 solution with Dock. Dual Displayport min. 3440x1440p @ 144Hz

Da_maniaC

Hi all,

I am currently contemplating to create a setup at home where i can finally move my Desktop PC to a separate room/compartment so i can eliminate (fan) noise from my room.

If i start to spend money regardless, i would like to try and future proof it a little bit while i'm at it.

The situation would require to support at least 15 Meters of distance between the PC and the docking station. Also i would like to be able to hook up at least 2, 3440x1440 @ 144Hz screens (but maybe have room to expand in the future).

So i was initially looking at the following setup:

-Corning Thunderbolt™ Optical Cable TB3 length 15 or 20 meters.

-Prokord Workplace Dockingstation Thunderbolt 4 100W

My Desktop PC currently is running a ASUS ROG Strix Z490-E Gaming which has USB and USB-C ports that support: 3x USB 3.2 (Gen2, 10Gb/s), 2x USB 3.2 (Gen2, 10Gb/s) type-C.

So i have 3 questions about this situation hoping someone would be able to advise or confirm for me:

-Is Corning planning to release a TB4 cable anytime soon? (just for future proofing sake)

-Does anyone have experience connecting 2 , 3440x1440p @144Hz displays to the Prokord dock?
-Will my Z490-E USB 3.2 (Gen2 10GBps) connection be fast enough to run 2 , 3440x1440p @144Hz displays, a 1GBps UTP and some USB peripherals etc. ?

Last question (totally optional):

-Could a setup like this ever support a Samsung G9 OLED 5120x1440 @ 240Hz and a smaller 2540x1440 120Hz secondary screen next to that?

Just get a long usb cable and 2 optical displayport cables. Doesnt get much more future proof than that.

Using docks, convertors,... all of that adds complexity that isnt needed and points of failiure or points that may no longer wor properly in the future.

Best thing about just 3 cables its about as cheap as it gets!

No. Doesnt have the bandwith for it.

Also you dont have thunderbolt. So the thunderbolt solution wont work.

Also keep in mind desktop thunderbolt NEEDS DISPLAY INJECTION. If it doesnt have a gpu going into it no display. Then it is entirely up to the thunderbolt card, gpu, dock AND display of displayport mst is supported.

Just a massive headache really. Keep it simple

Thanks for the reply. No idea why i did not consider this scenario yet actually.
And with the USB cable just hook up a dock that does actually support peripherals + LAN i take it?

(The new location for the PC has power but no LAN so...that's why i was also looking at the Docking station).

For network, you might want to consider getting a set of Powerline adaptors. Do note the lan speed, gigabit vs ethernet. You want gigabit

I have really bad experience with those (speed wise).

I guess i will use the same cable guide to pull a UTP CAT6 cable in the other direction...

Good idea. Yeah they can differ quite a lot. Really depends on how the power is wired and what quality of wires you got.

You wouldn't even be able to use a Thunderbolt cable with a  USB C port. It needs to be a Thunderbolt port!

But as mentioned before, don't do it that way. It's a headache to get it running properly and even then it consistently causes issues.

I mean you could if the cable you get is proper usb 3

Else well just run a lan cable?

Yeah the whole idea is to run as little cables as possible. So if i can get all remaining connectivity (except display) via the USB 3.2 Gen2 connected to a dock that would be highly preferrable.
