Has anyone used a minicomputer and how does it compare to a laptop?

They're alright, will probably be outperformed by a laptop (obviously not all of them, just most of them are quite low-power). Depends on your setup, do you already have a screen, keyboard and mouse?

A lot of mini-PCs (mostly thin clients) are intended to "outsource" their compute and resources from a centralized server in a big network, so they don't need/have powerful CPUs (they will usually still perform well for normal office work and web browsing).

Of course you can get them with better hardware, but unless you already have a screen and peripherals, a laptop might make more sense.

Depends on what you are looking at really.

 

To broad of a class of products to say rhey are good or bad.

 

Some are terrible others are nice depends on the usecase really.

The Intel N100 minis are usually fine, I wouldn't go with anything lower. You can find them for 150 USD/EUR sometimes.

Depends, can be cheaper. I don't believe there is any high performance ones available, unlike laptops.
