GIGABYTE GA-B650M-DS3H

Any thoughts about GIGABYTE GA-B650M-DS3H? Is there a reason to buy a more expensive B650 motherboard if no additional features are needed? Would this support all current AM5 CPUs without heat or other issues?

Its not bad but there are better boards, thermals, VRMs, IO etc for not too much more expensive, where are you based and i can recommend a board

System specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D [-30 PBO all core]

GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT NITRO+ [1050mV, 2.8GHz core, 2.6Ghz mem]

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB 32GB 6000MHz CL32 DDR5

Storage: 2TB SN850X, 1TB SN850 w/ heatsink, 500GB P5 Plus (OS Storage)

Case: 5000D AIRFLOW

Cooler: Thermalright Frost Commander 140

PSU: Corsair RM850e

It's a fine board. I wouldn't go any lower, Gigabyte boards especially have some weird issues on the boards lower end than that (things like PBO being disabled in the BIOS), but this is the lowest end board that doesn't have that problem. It should be fine, and it's pretty cheap as well.

Also take a look at the B650M-HDV/M.2, that's another board with good enough power delivery and similar features, but has been (at least more recently) been selling for less on average.

I know that there are better boards for not too much more, but are there better ones for about the same or a little more? Better options I have are about 25-30% more expensive.

I know B650M-HDV/M.2 is cheaper and has support for M.2 PCIe Gen5x4, but it has not been available from the shop I usually buy from for months, so I am considering other options.

Do you have a specific size preference? and budget?

Decent mATX board, but dunno prices for you

I can only find the non-mATX model, but it's 50% more expensive than the least expensive options. I do prefer ATX, but if i am paying that much, I would prefer to get a B650E motherboard, even for a little more.

Why? OOC

Is this for a gaming build?

And i still cant really recommend anything good without knowing where youre based, as in spain, for example, there are a lot of decent boards for the price gigabyte Gaming AX, MSI gaming plus, etc, but in america the Gigabyte Eagle AX is better than most boards at that price point and much cheaper than any similar tier boards and would be the one i recommend for the majority of applications for price-performance

No, for PCIe 5.0 x16 and PCIe 5.0 M2 support if I ever need them.

You wont need them for a long time, weve only recently hit the PCIe 3.0x16 limits for GPUs with the 4090, anything below that can comfortably run on PCIe gen3 and on top of that the performance hit for running a 4090 on PCIe gen 3 is around 2-3%.

For SSDs, unless youre transferring terrabytes often and regularly, you wont need gen 5 NVMes and even then high end gen 4s will be able to do that in no time at all anyway

Even if I will not need them for a long time, I still think it's better to build a system with the latest technology, if its for a small extra cost, as unless it fails, I will probably keep it for many years.

It really wont provide any benefit, youll more than likely need to change motherboards again before being able to make use of them, id recommend getting gen 5 on your next motherboard upgrade, or maybe even the one after that, but right now theyre a largely redundant technology as we havent caught up to them in the other formats that matter, GPU etc

No, there isn't any benefit (yet) for Gen 5.  SSD's don't provide real world speed boosts, and there is not Gen 5 GPU, let alone one NEEDING Gen 5.

It'll handle years worth of AM5 chips, like B350 does for AM4.

It's a solid board, but there are others like the Lightning and a few others at the budget end that are good picks too.  B650 is very strong for this generation.

What motherboards are not much more expensive than either GA-B650M-DS3H or B650M-HDV/M.2 and have a better VRM?

I can't find Eagle AX. Currently, for about 30% more, I can buy either GA-B650M-AORUS ELITE AX or GA-B650M-GAMING X AX. Are these worth the extra cost? Are there any choices with better sound than the Realtek ALC897 Codec?

Think you need to move up to the Pro AX f you want the Realtek 1220 setup.

That said, doubt you could tell any difference between them.  The Elite AX is a 12+2 board, so if that's worth 30% more then rock it.  For me it was, as I went with the Pro AX for various reasons (some even make sense).

I could go all the way and buy ASUS TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS for an additional 20% more, but that still has S1220A. Another inexpensive choice is MSI PRO B650-S WIFI, any ideas about its VRM?
