I've currently got 100mbps LAN. But, I'm looking to get into the 1000 mark. My cable modem, pc, and server currently support 1000mbps. But, I have a router acting as a switch, which is 10/100. I would like gigabit LAN because I do video editing and move a lot of footage and clips back and forth to my home server.

What are my options? Preferably cheap. I know I'll need cat 6 cable. I've got that as well.

1. Count the total number of wired devices you want to connect (including your router) and add one

2. Take that number, go to the shops, get the cheapest switch you can find that has at least that number

3. Plug everything into the switch i.e. modem -> router -> switch <- all the things

Fools think they know everything, experts know they know nothing

You wont need CAT6 cable. All you have to do is buy the cheapest gig switch you can.

So, if I were to upgrade to a PoE injector for my network in the future, it'd be good to upgrade to Cat6?

Alright, I'll just look for a good inexpensive gigabit switch. Thank you.

If you already have Cat5e I wouldn't bother, but if you have to run new cables you may as well.

The shielding is primarily for large businesses where there is a lot of power near it, POE is extremely minimal.

Got a cheap Netgear Gig switch for like $20. The only problem I have now is my AT&T U-verse Gateway/Router is 10/100. Which sucks, I mean even when I had Comcast, their Xfinity Gateway/Router was 10/100/1000.

If you are paying for an internet speed past 100Mb/second then you need to call your ISP and have them give you the proper equipment.

Since I don't even think ATnT Uverse gets to that speed, you're at no disadvantage of having a 100Mb/sec modem.
