So currently I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium, and I want to upgrade to 8.1 since I have the option to get it for free from my school. Problem is that I don't want to reinstall all my current applications. I heard that upgrading to Windows 8 first then updating to 8.1 will work? I'd like some opinions.

Why don't you want to reinstall all of your current applications?  Or are you not able to?

My internet is horrible, so it will take a looong while to reinstall all my apps and games.
