Alternative to Google Notes and Microsoft OneNote

I need a free software solution for notes to sync across windows and android.

I love Google Notes for its reliability, it ALWAYS syncs, and it's very fast. I hate the fact that I get no text formatting, I just needed bullets, colors, basic stuff, but I have nothing.

I love OneNote for its flexibility on data. Actually, it has too much flexibility, it allows to add images, links, complex text formatting... I don't need that much. I hate the fact that it only syncs randomly. I usually have to force a sync multiple times (especially on android) to see the changes in windows. And if I don't have the time to wait, or forget to sync on one device I frequently get conflicts that need to be solved.

 

Can anyone recommend another solution that fixes these problems?

A very low priority nice-to-have is to be a self-hosted solution.

I used to use Evernote some long time ago in early 2010's, and it served me quite well back then. I suspect its still a pretty good product even now. I think it has all the things you want. Have a try at it.

I also used evernote back in the day and yes, I liked it... I switched when the free plan excluded mobile devices and now it's not much better, it has a limit on 2 devices, and I need at least 3: 2 laptops and an android phone

I use Obsidian. There is a paid sync feature, but since Obsidian works entirely with markdown plain text documents, I just use my NAS to continuously sync my notes between my PC, NAS, phone and tablet.

I have Joplin on a list I want to try out. Never used it, though from what I can tell it is a very basic note-taking app. It uses Markdown so very basic formatting, not sure about color. Their sync solution costs something, though from what I understand you can alternatively use cloud storage services as sync destination (also WebDAV, so could be used when self-hosting).

No Idea about the trustability and reliability though (haven't read much about it yet, could also be a complete scam from what I know).
