Phanteks Evolv Shift 2 AIR vs Glass - (Or other monolith style cases) - a matter of noise

DeerDK

Hello everybody.

Ive been going through a few GPUs lately as they all seem to keep being noisy, with dry scraping from the fans and/or coilwhine.

A big part of the issue is my setup, as its a mITX placed on a shelf above my monitor, so i get ALL the noise close to my head.

Therefore ive started considering a new case. Its not something im super enthusiastic about as I love my little minifrigde Node 304, but the GPU swapping has kinda worn me down a degree where im opening up to another case.

For a new case to make sense, it has to be a monolith style case, as i can put that in a closet next to my gaming setup (the whole thing is inside an IKEA metod, so i open the doors when gaming)

Ive looked at Phanteks Evolv Shift 2, as I really dig the looks of it, but im in doubt if i should go for the vented panels or the glass version. I get that vented panels gives better airflow, but if i wanna minimize noise, maybe the glass is better?

Ive also considered the Corsair 2000d and Silver Stone G1M Alta.

Ideally I would like to keep my U12S noctua fan, but I realize that i probably have to get something more low profile. Still wanna aircool though.

Any thoughts or experience?

mITX is awesome! I regret nothing (apart from when picking parts or have to do maintainance *cough*cough*)

is this the NH-U12s heatsink? if so you'll have to find a case with enough space

it's not a quiet case so it won't have dampening on the sides. Get the mesh

the 2000D airflow's temps are not spectacular, anything but

The evlolv shift XT is quite a bit different to the evolv shift 2 so don't link those two

Yeah, but that narrows it down to the Corsair 2000D, as most monolith style cases tends not to accommodate a 158 mm cpu cooler.

Thanks, very good to know.

Im aware, its a completely different case and style. I don't think I brought it up, though?

How about the Meshroom case. It too will require a new CPU cooler, but it does look good. On the other hand it will probably do nothing to keep a whiny GPU's sound inside the case.

it's just in the list of the temps of techpowerup so I was saying to not compare the shift 2's temps to the XT's since they're different

if you are going to get a new case get something like the fractal terra (unless you specifically want a monolith style case in which case the 2000D airflow would be your only option to keep it) Fractal Design Terra Mini ITX Desktop Case (FD-C-TER1N-01) - PCPartPicker

I really like the look of that case, but it wouldn't really solve my problem as it would have to stand the same place as my current pc case. I need one that is shorter than 35 cm (and that is going to the max) for it to fit into the alternative position. (its one of these: https://www.ikea.com/dk/da/p/metod-hojskabsstel-hvid-70212560/)

Dunno. Probably some hundred Danish kroner, but might just hold on to it until my kids are old enough to build and play pc.

Money is not really the issue - apart from me not wanting to overspend. Im more trying to get it right, so it have a sensible build that doesn't have an aspect that really grinds my gears - like grinding fans or coil whine.

Edit, I've added a picture of my current setup. The alternative is to put the pc in the closet to the left. Then the doors will screen me from the sounds

2000d airflow should do then. It's not amazing since thermals aren't great but it does look pretty good

Yeah, but here my problem is, that the Terra is too long, if i recall correctly. Like 1 cm longer that my closet is wide.

Im heavily considering it. I have to get the wife to approve too, as I would have to move her yarn stash xD

you also have to account for the USB's and Display + power cables at the back

Could this case work, you'd need a new cpu cooler

Also a possibility. Although, then i have to get a new GPU as well 😂

I know, I know, I have not made it easy for myself.

Probably could get an Asus dual to fit though.

Right now I'm sporting a Msi Slim 4070 Super.

Its 30.7 cm

I'm considering just living with it, or trying another card again, but I'm just so fed up with try an replace

ohhh ok. Makes more sense

This case should fit it and JUST about fit in your closet

But the meshlicious is also an option

there's also the ridge (you can get all these in white btw)

I do love the Rigde, but it's also too big for the neighbor closet, and if I stick with the existing position I may as well stick with my Node 304 and try my luck at the GPU lottery again.

Komplett luckily let's me return without issues for 2 months

They are both very interesting. As I said, I'm a bit scared that the mesh room will be too noisy.

The Lian Li is very pretty, but when push comes to shove I'm just as tempted by the Silverstone Alta G1M, as it is also quite nice looking IMO
