NEED HELP - streaming with 'PLEX' from home server

I am very new with this.

I have set up a home server at home using 'TrueNAS' as the operating system (this is an old PC that I had lying around). This home server is used to stream movies, series, and music to my TV and laptops. I use 'PLEX' for this purpose. When I installed TrueNAS, set up movies, and installed Plex, I could stream everything perfectly to my laptops and TV.

I don't use my server every day, and to save power, I turn off my server. However, when I want to stream movies via 'PLEX,' 'PLEX' can no longer find my server. Is there a way to use PLEX after the server has restarted?

server is directly connected to my router.

Thank you in advance.

Not really. The server needs to be online, if you want to stream from it. If possible, you could try configuring the BIOS to boot on LAN. Then it should start up if you try reaching the IP of the server. The configuration of boot on LAN can be different from BIOS to BIOS, depending on manufacturer and BIOS version. Therefore you should lookup the steps for this configuration for your Mainboard.

So PLEX is installed on the server?  But you want to stream when the server is off?

Logically, how would that work?

Put a wifi outlet in there, plug the server into it.  Turn it on when you need it, remotely.  Wait 2 minutes, watch PLEX.

Put a wifi outlet in there,

Just for clarification: You meant a LAN outlet, right? I've never heard of a wifi outlet.

Did you check, if the app is confgured to autostart in TrueNAS?

This.  I have my PLEX Server app to start on Windows startup.

I tried Boot from LAN but didn't do what I wanted.  I like the ability to restart the server, turn it off or on remotely.  Since people access it while I am at work  or away.

Using a Kasa Wifi outlet thing, coupled with Boot with Power setting, is a good way  around it.

TrueNAS isn't really intended to be turned off. If you have the right hardware it can idle at pretty low power levels.

You could just host your stuff from your desktop.

Theoretically plex should automatically start when you boot up trueNAS. It may be an IP problem and you could possibly fix it by assigning a static IP on your router to trueNAS.

I have always had weird issues with using apps or jails in truenas with less control over them.

This was one reason I switched to virtualize truenas under windows and passing through the drives.

Having Plex installed on the same server would be more useful here. For TrueNAS Core, there are basic apps including Plex available in Jail. On TrueNAS Scale, on the other hand, Plex can be found in TrueCharts or Docker. The service should resume after a reboot. (Note: Docker is no longer bundled since Scale version 23.10.1, requiring manual installation.)

Also, try making more reasonable schedules on power-on & -off, for example, shut the server down from 0:30 to 8:30, or your regular bedtime.☺️
