M.2 drives not working on Gigabyte GM-B150-D3H

Hello!
First of all, I’ll try to make this as clear as possible, even though we’ll have to play with numbers and letters.

I have in my possession;
New Sabrent Rocket Gen 4 4x NVMe SSD
SKHynix PCIe Gen 3 4x NVMe SSD
LiteOn SATA M.2 SSD

Gigabyte advertises the MB to support Gen 3 4x NVMe (and SATA) M.2 drives, and I tried all 3 of those drives, and NONE of them worked, or were even detected by the BIOS. But, interestingly, the SKHynix drive did somehow softlocked the BIOS, because the restart didn’t worked, nor Ctrl + Alt + Del, and that drive was getting boiling hot.

Do note that I use ALL of the 6 SATA ports, (excluding SATA Express) but even with the SATA drives disconnected from the PSU, none of the M.2 drives worked. I also tried the Sabrent drive without the GPU, since it might take some PCIe lanes, nothing.

CPU: i7-7700
GPU: RTX 2070
BIOS: F24

I would try using a PCIe x4 to M.2 adapter for 7-10$, as the M.2 should just work… soo no idea

NVME show up kinda weird in some BIOS.  Does it show up when you use a windows 10 USB installer and it's the only drive plugged in?
It looks like your M.2 should show up in the "OffBoard SATA Controller Configuration" menu.
Other things to check (will result in currently installed operating systems not booting) are the UEFI vs Legacy mode and what mode the SATA controller is in.
Also - if you have PCIE devices installed in slots other than just the top 16 lane slot, that would cause conflicts according to the chart you posted.

I'm not sure if you can use all of your SATA ports and the M.2 slot at the same time. Try unplugging the SATA data cable from the motherboard. Even though you disconnected the SATA power cable. The motherboard stills knows that something is plugged into the SATA data port. If the SKHynix PCIe Gen 3 4x was getting boiling hot. It was not properly seated into the slot.

I already have OpenMediaVault (Debian based NAS OS) on it installed, and it detected nothing, while all the other SATA drives were still plugged in. Using a live Linux distribution with all the SATA drive not connected to power resulted in the same result.
If I recall correctly (because I can’t check for the next few hours) I went there and it found nothing, same as for “NVMe configuration”, which also showed that it didn’t found any disk.
As for UEFI/AHCI part, I set that PCIe devices are set to use UEFI, and AHCI (as this is the only option) for the drives.
The only PCIe device that I have plugged in is the GPU in the top slot.

I’ve already tried with (the power cables unplugged), while also disconnecting two SATA drives’ data cable, since the others are a bit hard to reach, but I can try to unplug a few more once I’m back.
As for the SKHynix drive, I will also try that again later.

So, little update.
I tried the SKHynix drive on my test bench, which is a ASUS Prime Z270-P Motherboard, and there it works.
I’ve then tried to put the SKHynix drive back in the Gigabyte board, making sure it made good contact, disconnected power from the SATA disks, as well as unplugging every SATA data cable, except for one, and still freezes in the BIOS.

the m.2 is from chipset, so no point checking the CPU socket, or mount…

I would have to check if I have even enough place, even for the GPU to not suffocate.
Talking about the GPU, will I have enough lanes for it, and the adapter then?

I’m talking about the bottom PCIe x16 from chipset, you don’t have to move GPU at all, and as it’s from chipset, it will not interfere with GPU lanes from CPU.

So, at school, we have the exact same motherboard and BIOS version, but there’s only one SATA SSD plugged in, and when I put my drives in… surprise surprise.

Well yes, it could be uefi version ( you can compare it, or just update yours ), but it’s probably just bad M.2 slot, or traces…

If so, they’re both the same, but I could eventually try to dump the BIOS, and restore it on mine.

Yes, as that’s the correct name

but that probably won't do anything.

if you want to get it running, the cheapest option is PCIe x4 to M.2 adapter for 7-10$ in the bottom PCIe x16 slot.

 

if you try to RMA, you would be weeks without PC… so probably not worth it

Not to mention that it is a board from 2015 and so far out of warranty. They would charge more than it is worth to fix it.

Explanation why the title changed; the board is actually a Gigabyte GM-B150M-D3H… whatever the “M” means.

Loaded “optimized defaults”, and magic, the drives are detected!
