Context: I have a sleeper PC built inside of a ~2006 Mac Pro case (cheese grater) and the airflow isn't great with 2 intake/1 exhaust.

My CPU is fine (12600K) but my GPU (AMD RX 6700 XT) is reaching 75*C average and almost 90*C hotspot/junction temperature when playing games like Fortnite & CS2, or running 3DMark Time Spy and FurMark.

I have a 2-fan card.

If I lower the fans too low, it overheats and reaches temps over 100*C but if I set a fan curve that's too aggressive, it sounds like a PS4 running and an airplane taking off at the same time.

I already set a 180W power limit and did a slight undervolt. I haven't overclocked at all.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

(Sorry if I don't reply to your post immediately, I've been busy 🙂)

so you want us to somehow lower the cards temp without increasing the fan speed that you purposely set too low and without adding more airflow to the case?

my fan speed is not too low?? Wdym?

it would appear the fans are capable of cooling the machine but due to the settings youve set them to its now overheating

whats the temps when the fans are set correctly to control the amount of heat?

this is my current fan curve

dont have time to test temps or anything right now, sorry

I’ll check my replies in the morning, going to bed early bc I’m tired 😴

What chassis fans are in the build right now?

What are the specific Noctua fans?

Take a picture of your system with the side panel off.

The only fix is to improve the airflow somehow. How to do that is easiest to figure out if we can see what you’re working with.

I would reverse the airflow in that case. Have the fronts exhaust and the bottom intake. You are fighting thermodynamics by trying to pull hot air down, and the cpu heatsink is throwing hot air at the gpu in the current config. It’s at least worth a few minutes with a screwdriver to test.

How do you have your chassis fans controlled? I see your curve above, but are all your chassis fans tied to that curve?

The fans are in with velcro on one side, so I can't really reverse it.

The curve above is in AMD adrenalin, so it's my GPU only. My case fans are auto-controlled by Gigabyte SIV (System Information Viewer) (also known as ThermalConsole.) So my motherboard is controlling the fans automatically. I have tried custom fan curves. It doesn't change anything. All it does is make the PC louder.

Here is why your gpu temps are bad.

1. The exhaust will not suck all the CPU heat out, and it will bleed up to the GPU.

2. The front fans push the GPU exhaust back to the GPU intake. Basically the airspace above the GPU where the intakes are is getting all of the hot air in the case.

I’ve given you a potential solution. Up to you if you want to try it.

So flipping my fans will make that big of a difference?

Don’t know til you try, but you’ll be drawing fresh air from the pci slots instead of recirculating all the hot air through the thing.

I wouldn't mind trying that at all. But would I have to change the orientation of the CPU fan? It's pretty annoying to do on my cooler 😂

If you're reversing the airflow, yes. Otherwise the fans will be fighting each other.

I don't know if the configuration itself is the issue though. You just may not have enough exhaust. So maybe instead of reversing the airflow, increase the RPM of the Noctua fan first to see if it makes a difference.
