Do you absolutely need a headset, or are you willing to consider a good pair of headphones with a desktop mic?

I've never had a desktop mic before, I kinda dont like the idea of  the mic getting in the way of my screen. But im down for both options. :)

you could get a mic that clips on the cord like the zalman mic1 and if you want open headphones i would recommend the HD558s or if you don't mind the color i would get the HD598

Unless he like bass heavy music, then he should get the DT 990 Pro 250 Ohms.

AntLion's ModMic ships internationally, or you can do a simple mod involving a zip-tie and a Zalman clip on:

For a desktop mic, the Blue Snowball gets the most recommendations and the iCE version is cheapest. The Samson CO1U and CAD U37 are good alternate options. I'd recommend a boom arm to get the mic closer to your mouth, but it's not 100% necessary.

As per specific headphone recommendations, the AKG K612 and the aforementioned Sennheisers are all priced nicely.

Also are the Sennheisers noise cancelling?

Oh, no. Do you need noise isolation? I'd have to vote for the Lindy HF-100 or ATH-A500X in that case.

As per the headsets for comparison, Nanner's HyperX is a good option and I personally kinda liked the Plantronics RIG.

What do you guys thing of the G4ME ZERO gaming headset? http://en-uk.sennheiser.com/gaming-headsets-for-pc

It's basically an HD 380 Pro + a microphone, meaning you're paying over £100 just to have the integrated mic on the G4ame Zero. If you're willing to spend your money that way, go ahead - it'll be better than anything by a gaming company.
