Ive been trying my best to squeeze evryb it of performance out of my gpu. However there is one thing that always sticks out:
The gpu never reaches 100% usage its sitting quietly at 430W with 2800 mhz clock with about 98% usage. Is there something im doing wrong? I have heard that others could reach 3ghz with the xt model.

I dont have much experience with overclocking, so feel free to correct me 馃檪

It would be helpful to know more details about your system, like what GPU you have and what the other specs like CPU, RAM, PSU, etc.

As for reaching 98% utilization, I would consider that basically 100%. Anything above about 95% is normal for demonstrating that you are GPU limited - it doesn't need to be pegged to 100% exactly.

My psu is a be quiet! pure power 12, 1000w gold.

Oh and also, no matter how i set my oc, it will never reach a higher clock speed than 2880mhz, is this like some sort of protection? Because the last time i overclocked the gpu could be overclocked as extremely as the gpu could handle before crashing

Setting you put in to afterburner or precision these days are more of an 'ask' than a 'tell' GPUs are so locked down with power limits or clock limits.聽 Not to mention the auto over clocking that GPUs are already doing behind the scenes.聽 The most you can hope for is a couple of hundred MHz here or there聽

聽With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

When i use the auto oc setting in the amd driver, it sets the core clock to 3125mhz, I could not belive my eyes! But it doesnt reach above 3ghz, oh well! I could still reach 250mhz above boost clock

Overclocking your GPU isn't going to help when you're 10th gen chip is the limit at only 1080p.聽

Simply not fast enough for a 7900xtx to work as hard as it can at that resolution. Not a GPU you'd realistically want to pair with that resolution display.

I know 1080p is not the best combo with this gpu, but it was the best I could buy at the time, also the 10 cores come in handy when multitasking / coding

7900 XTX usually annihilates the RTX 4090 at 1080p, the specific limitation you're running into is the IPC/cache limit the 10900f has. Anything before Intel 12th generation has significant limitations in single threaded performance, so never seeing 100% utilization of a 7900 XTX at 1080p with that CPU makes sense.

Intel Single threaded performance deltas (using cinebench R23 single thread scores and using the best processor tier)

4th-10th, ~22% increase

10th-11th, ~22% increase

11th-12th, ~19% increase

12th-13th, ~12% increase

Notice how the first metric stretches across 6 generations, this is because the increase in performance between them was mediocre, demonstrated by the next 3.

Cinebench R23 doesn't appear to scale with cache either, which has substantially increased per core in the last couple generations.

Builder/Enthusiast/Overclocker since 2012 with a focus on SFF/ITX since 2014.

You ain't getting 3GHZ all the time from a 7900XTX , The auto overclock feature is only the maximum boost clock.

To give you an example my card gets 3000-3050mhz in AC Valhalla.

In Avatar its sitting at 2800-2850mhz.

Modern gpus don't work like you think,聽 They dynamically scale the clock speed based on how much they can currently get with the current power limit.

It's been a long time since you just bumped the clock speed and got a set value.

Also to extract performance you need to increase the power limit and undervolt the gpu at the same time , You can add a memory overclock to that aswell but at 1080p your card is way overkill.

Should probably have spent some of your budget on the monitor instead of pouring everything into a 7900XTX.
