Do I need to set something before doing a CPU upgrade?

I am planning to upgrade to a Ryzen 9 5950X. Currently I have:

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 2700X
  • Motherboard: ROG Strix X570-F Gaming
  • BIOS Version: 2802
  • RAM: 2x 16GB TEAMGROUP-UD4-3600

 

What do I need to do before upgrading the CPU?

  • I already checked the BIOS version and it is higher than the version listed below. image.thumb.png.2feb0e717d2526eb96b593c853bb0187.png
  • The current RAM modules are not listed in the QVL, but it is currently working on my current setup. Although I have to manually set the speed and timingimage.png.28f3c2299e221887d2857c78d57143f5.png
  • My RAM never ran on its advertised speed ever since I bought it because of Ryzen 2700X's memory controller can't go past 2933MHz (link). Would it damage or cause excess wear and tear to the RAM modules?

agree with RONOTHAN, as long as the bios is updated, you shouldn't worry it

That's the most important thing to check.

 

Do the swap, and keep your 2700X handy for a while just in case.

Would the RAM work at its advertised timings and speed on the Ryzen 5950X or do I have to use the current timings and speed?

Personally I'd remove any custom ram settings before the CPU swap. I'm not sure if the bios would reset it anyway or not, just higher chance of it working 1st time if you let it boot at base speed. Once you're running with the new CPU you can see if XMP works before further custom tuning.

What's the main usage of the system? If it's gaming you better get a 5800X3D.

 

Ryzen don't like odd timings very much. You can set the CL to 20 and see what happens.
