Windows 8.1 is locking up randomly...

Go to solution Solved by mickman14,

WELL, this is a stretch but on alot of AMD hardware the hardware monitors use kernel modules that only work on intel/nvidia. IF Afterburner is calling these then it could be causing the crash, but it's worth a shot. Try disabling Afterburner from loading at startup, And it could be an 8.1 thing. Theres plenty of other things that worked in 8 but not 8.1. Just like things that worked in 7 but not 8.

Thanks mate I'll try this once I do the memtest :) Will report back shortly!

Hey guys. I'm having some issues after my SSD died and I upgraded to 8.1 on the replacement. I keep getting random lock ups that can only be fixed by rebooting my PC, and it's getting frustrating. Happens midgame, or mid video, or while nothing is happening and my pc is just idling while I'm in a lecture. All drivers have been updated and I keep on top of windows updates too.

Specs: FX8350 (happens while overclocked AND at stock)

Asus M5A99FX Pro r2 Mobo

Samsung 840 Evo 120gb SSD

Gigabyte HD7950 Windforce r2

Corsair Vengance 2x4GB RAM

Going through event viewer, all I can find from the time of crash is:

Event 36888 Schannel - in the error section

Event 11 Wininit - in the warnings

Event 219 Kernal-PnP - in the warnings

Anything else to look for would be awesome as I'm at a loss for what to do now and these reboots are really frustrating this close to the end of the uni semester.

Downgrading would be a pain in the butt JelleDekkers... I really just wanna fix the issue that I've got on this set up. It was bad enough setting everything up again after my SSD died. I never had this issue on my old SSD running windows 8, it's only happened since the upgrade to 8.1

What programs do you have running in the background? all the time?

Just the logitech app for my G9X, fl.ux, and MSI Afterburner... recently added fl.ux but this was happening beforehand. Was running the G9X/afterburner combo on my old SSD in win8.

So memtest came back all good, and I've just turned off afterburner to see if this is the issue. Can you guys recommend a good alternative in case it is the issue? :)

Well, what do you use it for? Do you use it for overclocking? If so Amd Overdrive is quite good, or the system monitor?

BTW Overdrive is a part of the catalyst control center.

Looks as though afterburner was the issue, as I just survived my first full night since the new SSD went in. I use afterburner to dial in my overclock and the on screen FPS reading was nice too but I'll live without it for decent stability. Might give the Asus tool a try as it was great with my old DirectCUII GTX660Ti :)

Again I like overdrive, and look into fraps, it's about $40 but it has an fps overlay and quite a few other things you might find useful. Definitely worth the invesmtent IMO. Maybe give the free demo a try?
