I have a i77700k and 2070 super. I want to upgrade slowly starting off with my cpu. Looking around it is 50/50 on what one is the best. People say the r7 7800x3d is the best cpu for gaming and can run a 4090 no problem without bottle neck. But, Everyone els says the i9 13900 or 14900 is the best.  I don’t really care to much about price I just want the best cpu so when I buy the new 40 series TI cards or 50 series I won’t need to upgrade it, and I want the most FPS I can get. Anyone give me some insight on what one is better or if I’m missing a better CPU?

7800X3D would be better for now, its the start of the AM5 platform, intels 14th series is (i think) the last gen to be supported on its socket so if you want to upgrade further than 14th gen youll have to buy a new motherboard again

If say a 8800X3D next gen or 9800X3D comes out in 2 gens, it should still be using AM5

7800X3D also is just better in a few ways, similar or better performance in most games (though does lose in a select few games to intel, but not by much) and much less power draw, therefore much easier and cheaper to run and cool

Base price is also about 3/5 of the intel CPUs of similar performance

However thats just for gaming, if your looking into anything productivity based beyond this id recommend intel

Both are really good CPUs, and realistically they're both so fast that you'll have a really good time with each. While the 7800X3D's 3D V-Cache makes it really, really fast in certain workloads, particularly gaming, the i9-13900K/14900K has a lot more physical cores, which makes it significantly faster in productivity-related tasks.

In the end, it depends whether you want to focus on gaming or want to do some productivity work too.

Also, get a contact frame and a REALLY, REALLY good cooler for the i9, if you do get it. Those things draw over 400W under load and are damn near impossible to cool. My recommendation is a Thermalright contact frame combined with an Arctic Liquid Freezer 360/420mm AIO.

Ok thank you. I’m mainly focusing on gaming, I don’t do any editing or other work on this computer it’s only for games. I did hear the i9 takes a lot to cool. I might try the rysen, I have only had intel chips and want to try AMD. But if the i9 was ALOT better at gaming I would just stick to that one. Does the 7800 X3D require a cooler as good as the i9 does?

No it draws about 1/3 of the power, im using an air cooler on mine with a suboptimal setup (i wanna see my RAM) and still only hit about 55/60C when playing cyberpunk 1440p maxed settings with around 120fps, idles at around 38C and max ive ever seen it hit while stress testing both it and GPU at the same time for over 10mins was 78C

Ok cool. Thanks for the insight I think I’ll try out the Ryzen. I was thinking of trying it to begin with but there is so many different options and opinions that I started to wonder if it’s actually as good as some say.

Did you even  look at a review video to compare the two?
