Hello all,

I'm having issues.

Let's start with what caused the issue.

We had a bad storm a few days back, and lightning struck very close to our home.

Our response, was to ignore it for a while (power went out), eventually power came back, and all seemed fine.

Until we noticed we didn't have any internet at all. So after further inspection, we found our router had a yellow power light, broadband light lit up, and wireless light lit up green.

No amount of resetting, unplugging or anything changed it, so we called AT&T who sent us a new router.

Now, we live off the beaten path, so our cellphone signal goes through a cell repeater, so we had to have internet ASAP. So I ran up to the local Best Buy, and bought a Netgear router, and modem.

After fiddling with it for about an hour, I gave in, and called Netgear. After an hour phone call, they recommended I return the Modem I bought, and get a new one. Which I did, and got the same issue.

I got all lights on, besides the internet light, which turned Red. My computer wasn't connecting to the modem at all, hardwired desktop btw. I gave up with the foreign technical support, and plugged the ethernet cord into my laptop.

The connection worked fine, and I was able to sign into the network, and it was perfect. So I tried my desktop again, still no connection. Frustrated, and tired (it's around midnight at this point), I decided to quit working on this computer, and just play on my desktop, because I assumed the issue was with my parents tower.

I got to my computer to see the same issue as my parents! No connection, and not sending anything. So, after fidding for a while, I noticed I had cell service (a hardwired connection). So I got my PowerLine adapter (one of the ones that runs signal through the wiring of the house), and plugged it into my computer. Perfect! Connected instantly.

Perplexed, I went to bed.

Our new AT&T Router showed up today, so assuming the issue was the Netgear router, I plugged in the AT&T one (which is Netgear too...). I got the exact same issue, Wired worked for my laptop, but neither of my desktops.
I called AT&T, and after about an hour, I was told they couldn't do anything more, and they gave me a number to a company who tried to fix this stuff for a fee.

So I'm reaching out to you LTT community, please help.

The connections that work are: Wireless (Phones, Laptops, PS3), PowerLine Adapter, Wired to my Laptop.

Connections that don't work are: Switch, Desktop run through only an Ethernet cord.

The gear I bought is a Netgear DM111PSP Modem, Netgear N600 Router.

Please help.

Did the switch get shorted or your ethernet ports on the desktops get shorted? I was using a small 4 port switch which saved my ethernet port on my server the switch died but the server's ethernet ports worked fine with out the switch see if your switches are dead and see if you're ethernet jacks are dead.

My desktops are working fine with a powerline adapter, which uses the desktops Ethernet ports.

The switch  might be dead, but I'm not worried about that at the moment, I can't get the desktops to work going from Modem --> Router ---> Desktop, or Modem ---> Desktop. Without the use of the PowerLine.

Sounds like a bad switch.  Try bypassing all equipment and test it by connecting directly to your modem (remember to reboot the modem every time you plug something new into it), if that works, add the router back on, if that works, add the switch back on, if it doesn't work after you add the switch you've found the issue.  Also use the computer you're having issues with in each step along with another PC that works (the known good).  Basically, work your way from the ISP side of things to your PC, you can work backwards from that though I find it easier to start simple and add complexity than to remove complexity for troubleshooting.

-snip-

The switch isn't in the equation already.

As I stated, I'm going from the wall, to the Modem, to the PC, and still not being able to connect.

I can do the same thing, but to my laptop, and I have no issue.

Both desktop PC's in the house are having this issue, UNLESS, I run it through a PowerLine Adapter (which still uses an ethernet cord from the outlet, to the computer)

Try and buy a cheap NIC for testing purposes and put it in one of the towers, if it works then you know your on-board NIC's shorted out and you'll be a step closer to fixing the issue, the switch also could of shorted out.

Lol I should read more

Have you changed cords?

Multiple times.

And hows everything looking in the device manager for the NIC's in the towers, I was thinking it could be driver related.

Have you verified that the NIC's are actually working correctly? Try transferring a file from the laptop to the pc via ethernet.

They're working fine.

I can connect them to the internet with the PowerLine Adapter, which goes through the Ethernet port.

Could it be the cabling in the wall then? You connected your laptop to the wall?

My laptop, and desktop were connected with the same cable. It's not the cabling in the wall.
