Budget (400$):

Country: US

Games, programs, or workloads that it will be used for: Call of Duty, Apex Legends, Valorant, Rust, Content Creation

Specs:

GPU: 2060 SUPER

CPU: I5 9600K

RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200 MHZ

MB: GIGABYTE B365M DS3H LGA 1151 (300 Series)

So I'm looking at upgrading the CPU and Motherboard for this build and the GPU later down the road as I just upgraded from a 1650 super. One of my boys was telling me that for my budget my best bet would be to go with a (ryzen 7 5800x) and (Asus ROG Strix B550-F) for the motherboard. He said that I would notice a difference with gaming and especially multi-tasking.

P.S All comments are welcome just please don't recommend something that's out of the budget, The entire point of the build is not to be crazy overkill PC or HIGH END it is supposed to be a budget-friendly build, and recently I've noticed with the newer titles coming out that the 9600k is starting to struggle more and more as the years go. The point is to show you don't need to spend thousands of $ to make content or to play at a competitive level or just play PC games in general.

What does Content Creation mean?  A video of your kids editing out the stain on their shirt, or real 4k videos for a YT channel?  Your productivity level is needed to know.

For budget ugrades, a 5600 will be a huge upgrade from the 9600K and still  handle any content you need to create and reuse your DDR4...

You're in a good budget for AM5 as well.  Near a Microcenter?  if not...

While only a 6 core, it's faster than the 5800X so performs equally...  and will allow a a better CPU when money or new generations emerge.

Your boi had the right direction but not angle. 5700X is a cheaper better buy. 10% cheaper, cooler, uses less power at 1% the performance cost. However 5800X3D would be the top tog in that generation to choose from, 5800X has been bested on all sides.

Check if 7000 Ryzen isn't already cheap enough. New board negates going AM4, might as well go AM5.

Am4 is irrelevant unless you are looking at the used market with 200-250$ 5800x3d and 50$ b3/450 boards in which case itd be a very compelling platform esp if you play games thatd leverage the cache like factorio or just need the thing to game and game only

Am5 is out of the question due to b650 boards seemingly rising in price, no point going am5 if you get a shit board with garbage vrms that wont be futureproof at all, cheapest one atm thatd be worth getting is the b650m ds3h at 140$ but might aswell spend an extra 10$ for the b650 livemixer. ddr5 is also expensive and the cheap stuff is not gonna be futureproof due to using trash ics that wont clock for shit (>7000) unless you buy hynix or klevv branded 5600c46 sticks but unless you find em cheap and/or used also doesnt make sense

13th gen however is an interesting option for new as you can get a 13600kf and a z690 board for abit under 400$

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4bQJRv

No it wont be futureproof like am5 where you can swap a new cpu in later on but thats irrelevant if you have a trash board and trash rams thatd have to be swapped anyways so this is about the best thing you can get new in your budget

I did not overclock, nor do I have the fastest RAM, nor did I tune the RAM.

Conclusion: If I tune my RAM (which is free) I score as much as the twice as expensive R7 7700X in Geekbench 6.
