I have a build planned out in pcpartpicker and had a concern

I am going to use the Ryzen 9 7950X3D with a ASUS ROG Strix X670E-F, but the website says something about how I might need to update the bios of the motherboard. I have no clue how ro do that and was wondering if it isn't a worry or if I should just look for a different motherboard.

Let me know what you think, thanks!

Updating the BIOS on modern ASUS motherboards is very easy.

It is recommended to update the BIOS on all B650 and X670 motherboards when using the X3D CPU's. Not just ASUS.

Heres an entire tutorial that shows you how to do that:

This guy has a bunch of videos about stuff like this.

Youd only really need to do this if your PC throws a cpu not supported error after you assemble and attempt to boot it.

Be aware that ASUS had a burning issue with the X3D CPU's so updating the BIOS is highly recommended as this fixes the voltage problems on launch BIOS that caused the CPU's to catch fire.
Later board revisions will come with updated BIOS but its recommended to check.
If anyone reads this, using ASUS boards with the X3D's is not dangerous, just update your BIOS and you are good to go 🙂

Yeah you can do that with a USB and the flash button on the back of the board.

btw, Just make sure you know why you're buying that 7950X3D for. It's not the best choice for 99.9% of use cases.

How do I know if I'm good to go? I'm assuming the pc will just not boot if the bios isn't updated. And if it boots into windows properly and everything does that mean I'm good?

It wont boot if it's not updated. And if it did boot then you're good, but you'll still have to update for better compatibility. Only this time you can just do it from the bios itself like usual. I'd again advise to make sure you actually need the 7950X3D for anything that is 100% useful to you before paying for it.

Yes yes. I'm currently running a RTX 3080ti with a 2600x. I'm far overdue for a cpu upgrade. The 7950X3D is nearly 200$ off for Cyber Monday and I basically don't want to upgrade this system ever again. I play many games along with streaming, recording, editing, and rendering in UE5 and Unity. I appreciate and understand the concern though😂

Are you saying a 600$ CPU is available at 200$? Can you show me where?

Nonono it was around 140$ off. At 560$.

Right now it's 120$ off at Amazon

Ah right you said "200$ off" and I read it wrong. yeah just get the 7800X3D if your PC is gaming only, it even beats the 7950X3D. That CPU is useless pretty much when the 7800X3D exists. If your PC is going to be used. Eitherway you'll need a new board as well, so if your PC is going to be used for any kind of productivity and isn't a gaming only PC then get the 13700K or KF, The best value option overall in my opinio would be the 13600KF.

Already got the board and the cpu so no bother. I'm curious though, how does the 7800x3D beat the 7950X3D if it has less cores, lower ghz, and worse single core performance?

The main selling point of the X3D lineup is the 3D v-cache which enables the CPU to do better in game. So because of that there is virtually not much difference between the 7800X3D and the 7950X3D regardless of core numbers or clock speed. To me personally that chip and its marketting and release has been a scam.

But if you regard core number and clock speed it will run better on Unreal 5, Unity, and editing right?

  • 2 weeks later...

I am planning on building my 7800X3D system here shortly, but not sure, based upon the support>BIOS page for the ROG X760 Gene mobo if I should be going with the BIOS version 1303, as stated on PCPartPicker, or the 1709 that appears to be the most recent released.

Maybe I'll start a new thread.
