My son's PSU cable is lose and every now and again the pc shuts down can I buy a new cable that runs from the PSU to the wall outlet if it's from the same PSU ? Or will I need to replace the whole PSU ? Thanks

Almost all computer PSUs use a standardized connector. I generally call it an ATX power cable. Tons of other devices use it as well. Only variation will be the gauge of the cable and therefore its wattage/amperage rating. Generally if its a standard thickness cable, it'll be fine for everything but the highest end systems. Then you're looking at 10A or higher cables.

it's not ATX power cable ... the connectors are IEC C13 and C14  (C13 is the plug on the cable, C14 is the receptacle on the power supply with the male pins)  .. in simple terms  C13 plugs into / mates with C14

So you can search amazon or other stores close to you using terms like C13 power cable or IEC C13 power cable or power cord ... example : https://www.amazon.com/s?k=iec+c13+power+cord

example in uk : https://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-PXT101UK3M-Computer-Power-BS-1363-Black/dp/B00B22TCRW/

I recommend getting one that has wires AWG 18 or smaller (smaller number = thicker wire)... AWG 18 or AWG16  will be good enough for 1500 watts or more.  If the cable is in metric sizes, aim for 1mm2 or thicker.

ps some very high wattage power supplies (1600w or higher) may use the higher current version IEC C19 and C20 pair.... cables look like these https://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-Computer-Power-Cord-BS-1363/dp/B00KDC0NW0/
