Which GPU?

I am a bit stumped, at clearance pricing my local shop has a XFX MERC319 6950XT for $839 CAD and a Gigabyte RTX 3070 Ti GAMING OC (LHR) for $429 CAD.

 

I know the 6950 XT will demolish the 3070Ti, but I game at 1440p/144hz so will I notice a difference and is it worth double the price?

Depends what games.  esports, get the 3070Ti.  AAA and new... the 3070Ti won't do 1440p/144.

 

So while the 6950XT is 30-35% faster than the 3070Ti, its not worth it for most games.  Depends if you have to get near the 144 or not with what you play.

The only issue I see here is 8gb of vram. I have hit cap multiple times on my 3070 laptop of all things at 1080p already in a couple new games like horizon and such.

 

So whilst the price on the 3070ti is REALLY NICE. It will also need a upgrade a lot sooner or quite a bit more dropped texture settings to stay going

I agree, but I meant to make it clear that for esports it'll be fine.  

 

Like you said, anything newer and it won't perform.  I should have clarified why.

What games are you playing?  This site is a good comparison, you can change the benchmark on the left to compare it to what you have now.  I can tell you if you play Diablo 4 for example, I can't run it on ultra on my 6750xt or 4070ti as it hits the 12gb vram limit and starts stuttering do to asset swapping.  I have to drop the settings down to high.  On my 8gb cards (3070, 2080ti) I have to drop it to medium to avoid the stuttering.  Only on my 3090 and 4090 can I run the game on ultra and the vram hits 20-22gb of use.  That's in widescreen at 3440x1440.  Depending on what you're playing I'm not sure you'll be able to tell any difference, surely not for nearly double the price.

I wanted to post an update. Thanks to everyone who replied and helped make my decision easier.

 

I decided to get the 6950XT because of the extra VRAM. I have been using a GTX1080 until now and the RTX3070TI was VERY temping at the price but despite a solely raw performance increase, they both have 8GB of VRAM which may be a concern moving forward. I also do not care for ray tracing and much prefer overall rasterization performance. I know there's no such things as 'future proof' but this should provide more longevity before feeling like I need to upgrade again.
