And you have proof of that?

Considering they usually have flavored oils and maybe some thickener (such as glycerin), that can leave a thin film capable of shorting stuff.

Aside from the fact that every vape liquid contains aerosolized semi conductive oils that additionally act as dust magnets and don’t just dissolve in the ether:

I vape around my desktop and have yet to even need to clean any sticky residue goop off the glass window or fans. So I'm calling all the above nothing more than anti vaping campaigns and scare tactics.

Dunno what you are vaping. If it's just water, than fine. Worst thing that can happen is condensation, but if you case is probably hotter than elsewhere, so it shouldn't happen there.

Yikes.

Well I didn’t mean it as a personal attack on your lifestyle. Just a statement of fact from sources other than my own personal/professional experiences.

I won’t get into specifics, but our primary reason for banning vaping in our environment was an increase in the rate of particulate accumulation on high airflow/restriction surfaces.

Granted, we aren’t talking about your average home computer the average user has.

A but off topic, but vaping near a computer is absolutely is one of the worst things for it.

It leaves thick residue that can short components.

this is the problem, and obviously  what happened, and op saying "static build up" honestly just sounds like trolling.

Obviously you were there to inspect the motherboard and come to your diagnosis.

Yes I Literally no idea what is happening very disappointed that anyone would be thinking I was trolling. In the past month my laptop has worked for a grand total of 3 day I've made 5 trips to the shop to get it fixed with no diagnosis. Every thing I have read point to static but I don't know for shor. Disconnecting the battery is a fix and they would have done that when they inspected it so it seems reasonable for someone to assume that there is no problem.

I watched a video of that model being taken apart and there is no way I'm not going to make it was if I took the back off.

When I spoke to the technician I asked about static build up and the steps to get rid of static would be the same as an inspection.

All I was asking is for some practical step I can take to avoid this

It's now on it 3rd repair in a month There Clam to have MSI qualified The guy in the shop says I can't do anything and I need to speak to customer service and customer service. I don't have the space for a desktop so I except the compmise on performance but I expect something that cost £1400 to turn on.

Re vaping I was making a joke about not paying attention to a lesson in school about voltage resistance etc. Given they are doing everything possible to not resolve this if vaping did damage components they I would have got told that and repairs are not covered.

Anyway it's still not working and I have no faith it's going to get fixed

Ittermentent faults suck
Static at some point may have caused it yes, but that is not what is going on going forward. A chip or a capacitor is damaged and it will only show up at certain voltages and frequencies.

The way for static to discharge is to ground. half of the motherboard is a ground plane in the middle. if there is a build-up, as soon as you ground the laptop(Plug it in) its gone.

Firstly you have not posted the countless threads discussion this issues the consensus is that both Pg and VG liquids are not conduct electricity. If they did vaping would not be enjoyable because you would get massive shocks from your vape. Think about how a vape coil works

For anyone still Fallowing this thread tangents asside. I finally got to talk to someone who knows what they are talking about.

To discharge static build up from an MSI GS66 you disconnect the power lead hold down the power button for 30 seconds.  With the power heald down connect the power lead and release.

No taking on the back and f ing about with the battery

That logic doesn't sound right to me, really.

  • Conductivity of liquids is not a fixed value, since impurities and dissolved substances can massively influence the conductivity. Best example is water: depending on the purity it covers multiple orders of magnitude from about 10^-10 down to 10^-5 S/m , drinking water can cover the range of 10^-4 to 10^-2 depending on mineral content, and seawater is at ca. 5 S/m. So any amount of solid particles suspended or other materials dissolved will increase conductivity potentially a lot
  • A heating coil would wouldn't shock you, the current is flowing through the wire of coil. Unless you connect another electrode to you or some other part of the pen, no current should flow nor electrical fields should be created. Otherwise, all those old-school immersion heaters etc. would shock everyone around them due to the water vapor, wouldn't they?

That’s discharging caps, not static buildup

As long as it works

but it doesnt work.

Static does naturally discharge through the air, What is air but a massive air gap capacitor spark gap.

But holding down the power button does not do that, because you are not grounding the static build-up, so I'm wondering what you are calling a static build-up now.
