I would guess that it's due to some type of compression or perhaps some optimization.

Nvidia actually has an incentive to cut down on the size of their drivers, because they host them on their own servers, which means they are paying for the bandwidth when people download them. So it's in their best interest to keep the download size as small as possible.

As for why it happened this summer, it could be because Nvidia finished up releasing their 40 series lineup, and so could free up developer time to reduce the size of the drivers since they weren't spending as much time on just making the 40 series cards work optimally. But that's a complete guess on my part.

I can only draw parallels with what Intel have been doing. There's a write up at https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-arc-drivers-now-half-the-size

Maybe nvidia have been doing something similar to part of this.

Which card? If it's an old one, they are likely removing functionality to force people to buy new GCs. If it's a 4000 series, probably optimization.

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

Nvidia has a unified driver for their gaming graphics cards - it doesn't differ between generations of cards. The size of this general Game Ready Driver download shrunk a lot at the end of May this year, going from nearing 900MB to around 650MB.

And, again, that could be optimization and/or deprecation.
