Budget (including currency): 600 CHF

Country: Switzerland

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: NAS, Webserver, VM Host

I'm looking for a home server build that consumes a maximum of 50W continuously and works as a NAS, small webserver for a few friends and me, and for hosting some lightweight VMs in the future.

The requirements are:

  • Processor to allow for the workloads
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • 4-6x SATA for harddrives
  • M.2 boot SSD
  • Any fitting form factor
  • Low noise level

Thanks for your advice

This can be 50W by itself, without taking into account the CPU, RAM, PSU inefficiencies, etc. 50W max just isn't a realistic power draw for a NAS.

Hm, I did not consider that to be that big of a problem as I most likely won't install 6 drives, intended to spin down the drives when unused and won't be using the NAS too intensively. If exceeding the power target with the drives is unavoidable I might go for more solid state drives.

A synology ds918 is under 50w under heavy disk use according to tech power up, but don't expect great vm performance on it.

Yeah a max power draw of 50W would likely be exceeded by the hard drives alone. If you had a system made of components with low enough powe draw to fit this wattage limit, its performance for VMs would not be optimal
