4070 vs 7800xt

Exactly what the title says, which one would be better suited for my needs? It would be strictly for gaming, for games like CoD, Valorant, Apex, Fortnite, WoW...

CPU wise I currently have a 3700x. With possible plans to upgrade this a few months from now if needed as I want to go from 1080p to 1440p.

And pricing wise they aren't too far apart? Assuming I were to get the lowest priced 4070.

There's reasons to go for both cards. The extra VRAM would mean that the 7800 XT has a better chance of being relevant 5+ years from now if the current VRAM usage trends continue for AAA games, especially at higher resolutions. Meanwhile with the 4070, you've got the Nvidia feature set (DLSS being the most important), significantly better ray traced performance if you care about it, and a much lower power consumption which depending on how much you pay for power would mean it might be cheaper in the long run to go 4070, even though it's $50 more expensive up front. Plus Nvidia's drivers are generally considered better than AMD's (not to say AMD's are bad, they've gotten pretty good over the past few years, though there's still a few issues with them). 

 

Since power is relatively cheap near me and I don't really use ray tracing or upscalers, I'd probably go for the 7800 XT as I'd rather have $50 in my pocket and the extra VRAM is nice, though if any of those features sounds nice to use going for the 4070 is understandable for only $50 more. Realistically the card from those lists that is the most compelling is that 1 open box ASRock Challenger 7800 XT for $425, as long as it's just a return from someone going for a 7900 XTX/4080/4090 (not damaged in any way, it should say on Micro Center's website whether it's damaged or missing anything) that's really hard to beat for the money.
