Hey everyone! This is my first time posting or even interacting on this forum but I just am not sure what to do anymore.

Recently, I was one of the unfortunate people who encounter a bug(?) on my s22 ultra, samsung won't repair for free but I've heard a bunch of users on a subreddit having the same problem where I can't use the phone on 120hz without majority of my screen showing just white pixels, a temporary fix a lot of us have used is to just switch it to 60hz for the mean time but the colors are still off on 3/4s of my screen. I literally just left my phone in my office locker and it's like that by the time I checked it at lunch time.

It is, it's just dumb that I have to be responsible for the repair, they're charging me around $310 US.

I'd just keep contacting support demanding a replacement and link the articles talking about how it's a common problem.
Also blast them on Twitter.

Samsung is not known for their repair services.  If this is an issue for you, consider Fairphone, like the framework laptop, many parts can be swapped out, including the display and mainboard.

A twitter message will go nowhere, and support doesn't care at all.  Be respectful and understand that Samsung doesn't yet care about repairable devices, and you'll be lucky to get a replacement device.

I suggest buying a used model of the device and sending your current one to Staples, so they can send it to ERI for recycling.

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

Software suggestions

Just get f.lux [Link removed due to forum rules] so your screen isn't bright white at night, a golden orange in place of stark 6500K bluish white.

released in 2008 and still being improved.

Dark Reader addon for webpages.  Pick any color you want for both background and text (background and foreground page elements).  Enable the preview mode on desktop for Firefox and Chrome addon, by clicking the dark reader addon settings, Choose dev tools amd click preview mode.

NoScript or EFF's privacy badger addons can block many scripts and websites that would load and track you, possibly halving page load time!

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.  Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.

Just for added context, I am unfortunately not in a position where I can afford to just buy a new phone. I live in the Philippines and this was my graduation gift, my family is not really well off and I don't want to stress them out about me already "breaking" the new phone in just a year of using it. Idk, I just feel kinda hopeless and not sure where to go from here unless maybe people with bigger platforms start caring about it. If you're also curious based off the subreddit, it seems like this was happening to a lot of units made in vietnam, or like particular serial numbers. I checked mine compared to theirs and it's also the same.

Well, it looks like you have a chance of sending your device to recycling with a company called Globe.

https://www.globe.com.ph/go/technology/article/donate-used-electronics.html

I doubt some repair shop will have the screen your device uses, so I recommend having it recycled, and extract what little bit of earth minerals possible.

Is there a used phone market in your area?  If you can find a device with an unlockable bootloader (Sony, Pixel) this will allow you to purchase a used device and get the software updated so you can keep using the device.

I would look at https://lineageOS.org and https://forums.xda-developers.com

Look for devices that are available in your area, and which ones have current software support from the efforts of the community.

Sadly I don't think donating my phone is an option for me. This is the only phone or electronics I have and don't have any money at all. I just hope Samsung will do something about it since it's not even our fault that this is happening

How far off, and does using greyscale help?
