So I'm looking to replace the CPU on my dad's laptop which seems to be crapping out on him. The laptop is an HP Pavilon DV4-2165dx, with a Core i3 330m, socket bga1288.

I've watched videos of someone replacing the cpu on this laptop, so I know the CPU isn't soldered on the motherboard.

But i am curious, however, if it is possible to upgrade this cpu to an i7 660ue. I was told that laptops are picky with what cpus they accept.

this is the cpu I want

and this is the laptop

is this possible?

thank you for your time

It used to be possible, but I believe all laptop CPUs are now soldered to the board.

EDIT: Never mind. If you can find that CPU, you should be fine. Not sure about upgrading it though.

I wouldn't recommend trying. I'd sooner save up a little extra cash, sell the old laptop and get a new one.

No risk. If you fry the one you got trying to solder in a new CPU you may be left with nothing.

He/she says the CPU isn't soldered to the board.

Ha, there I go reading what I expect to read.

I thought all BGA sockets were soldered? weird.

Well I guess the only concern I would have is power but from intel's page it looks like the i7 actually draws less.

I guess it's worth a try?

I guess. Remember OP, we're not responsible for any damages that may come upon this laptop.
