Hello

I have a problem with my GPU ( PowerColor Red Devil 6950XT) temps. It has been running hot since i bought it last year but I read that theses new GPUs run hotter than before and even 90c is normal. So I have kept using my GPU, keeping an eye on the temps, but lately I have been getting 100C+. I player Baldur's Gate 3 and on some scenes the hotspot temp reached 107C. Same with Starfield, I have seen 105C. Is this normal or should I RMA my card? I don't have it overclocked, if anything its undervolted. I tried manually and the built in undervolt. But the results are mostly the same. I play on 4k screen, and I have tried locking the fps to 60 and setting it to unlimited on Starfield. Still im getting these temp on 60fps, tho the game dips below this often. On BG3 I only played with 60 fps lock and same I have been getting fps dips, but since it was locked, I got the 107C with 60 fps, not more. My case has pretty good airflow, I think. It is Corsair 680x with 3 fans on front, 2 on bottom blowing air directly in the card, 1 on the back and 2 on top for the AIO cpu cooler. All fans are working on max speed, they are set to scale with gpu temp. The card is pretty big and heavy so I am using a stand to keep it from saging. The PSU is also corsair 1000w.

If any more info is needed just tell me and I will provide.

At no point do you mention which specific 6950 XT you have?

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Those cards can run with hotspot up to 110°C.

You can fix it by increasing the mounting pressure if you put washers under the retention bracket (risk of cracking the GPU die if you use too much pressure so beware!).

I've dropped temps on my 6800XT by almost 20°C on hotspot with that + Thermal Grizzly Carbonaut pad (I'd get Kryonaut next time instead).

Edit:

And no, your card is not undervolted if you used the Voltage slider in AMD Adrenaline Software.

That only changes frequency/voltage curve, card will still reach max voltage at peak frequency.

My card is still under warranty, so if I did that it would void it I think. Did you do it after the warranty was over or before?

Yes I only used the adrenaline software to do it manually. I used this option as well to do it.image.thumb.png.a5b7711eefaad19018a505d15556e0ea.png

I've done it still within warranty.

I haven't tried the auto UV utility, not sure how exactly it works.

If you want to actually cap your max voltage you'll need to extract the BIOS file with GPU-Z and then load it into More Power Tools.

There you can set core, SOC, VRAM voltages, change core, SOC, VRAM, Infinity Fabric clocks and more (even power limits).

It does not actually change the BIOS on the card and all changes will revert after driver update.

Don't touch what you don't understand, you can even brick the card if you overdo it.

I was able to get the card use 100W less while performing the same as it did on stock with MPT.

Depending on country, that doesn't matter. In the US companies cannot legally stop you from removing your GPU cooler and remounting it, no matter the number of "warranty void if removed" stickers.

If you're reading hotspot temps and not core temps, then 100-105C during games is normal. My Radeon VII did the same, though it actually allowed for up to 115C and would hit that sometimes before I put it on water. Never caused any issues with the card (I eventually got rid of it due to driver issues, no hardware problems with it).

I really don't understand what you wrote about underclocking. Never used those programs, and if there is risk of destroying my card, then I won't try it.

Yes, I am reading the hotspot temps. The normal gpu temp is usually 20-30 degrees lower.
