CPU 6 core or 8 core

Hi i’m building my first PC, and i’m mainly just going to be using it for gaming. When it comes to picking a CPU is 6 cores going to be enough, or should i spend the extra money on a 8 core CPU.

Right now i’m torn between the Ryzen 5 5600X and, the Ryzen 7 5800x

Are you building an old PC instead? AM4 parts are old.

 

Also, out of those two, get none, there are the 5600 and 5700X, they do exist.

 

What is your budget?

IMO while 6 cores can still give a great gaming experience, if you expect to keep it for some time without upgrading I'd lean towards getting 8 cores. Only if budget is tight would I consider 6 core with the door open to an upgrade in future.

 

Also consider how it might balance with your GPU choice.

In a loose personal terminology, 6-cores is 95% performance and 8-cores is the fully 100%
 

In my opinion, going for 5600X is already good enough your main built in for gaming

 

Gamers Nexus have tested rigorously that going to expensive AM4 CPU (Ryzen 5900X) only gives average performance of 1.1747% compared to 5600X (more numbers means more better, lol)

P.S.

If you do have more budget, the best CPU for AM4 motherboard is 5800X3D

It has the best FPS and 1% low

If you don’t have a lot of budget now, you may use 5600X, and upgrade to 5800X3D years later when the price has dropped

This is a nonsensical question, as we don't know your financials, pricing, region, etc.

 

Give us more information to make a proper decision please.

 

Short answer is the 5600.

good options if you can find em used for cheaper than a new 5600 or 5700x

 

Id just go for a 6 core, if you really need more performance set multiplier to 47/48 and set vcore to 1.4v llc off (should droop to around 1.32-1.34v under load), ~3800mhz ish ram oc would also help

I would only get the X models.  5600X runs at 4850 with PBO. My 5600X is running happily in my sons gaming rig.
