Ideal laptop for work/casual gaming

Hi! I want to buy a new laptop that can last for the next 3-5 years. I need the laptop mostly for programming and for sometimes I would like to be able to play some older games(not the newest AAA games). Overall I want a laptop that has a quite good battery time and also has the performance to run heavy duty tasks too. My old laptop was a HP Pavilion 15 series and had a lot of battery issues, I had 2 battery changes in the last 3 years since I bought the machine and it only operated about 1.5-2 hours on battery when used for working.
My budget for the new machine is about a ~1000 EUR.

Can you please help me out with suggestion? I am not that familiar with the current trends/capabilities of laptops.
