Hey Hey,

I have a Asus Xonar Essence STX, had for many years, recently i went on holiday and turned the power off to my pc for a month, came back turned it back on and i can hardly hear my sound, i have to turn the volume up to 100%

i tried my headphones and it sounded very like echo and no bass, i tried in another pc and same issue.

one thing i noticed is when i turn on my speakers it starts abit louder then goes quiet, (not the normal loudness)

is it dying? can i fix it?

what would be recommended to replace it? using RCA cables currently

Thanks

Not sure you have to same issue but I had a windows update mess with the default audio settings next time I booted up. Audio enhancement stuff was on, which took out all the bass and made everything sound very bland and super quiet. By default the Xonar driver disables that settings menu in windows. Turned out the driver was missing. Had to remove then reinstall the driver then reboot to fix the issue.

What you describe sounds like a broken ground connection. I would try another cable first.

Just new RCA cables? What do you mean ground connection?

This actually looks similar to the "black goo of death" problem, many KRK loudspeakers suffered from.

The glue on the resistor above the one is a little green and that it a hint that the lead of that one is very corroded.

By the way this is a switched power supply, please only work on it if you really know what you are doing, because the big capacitor up there holds rectified mains voltage and this is potentially lethal!
