Hi,

i just got my new GPU. It's 7900XTX but i have a small problem. It's 3x8pin GPU, Red Devil. I hav CableMod cables, but ony 2x8pin, so i'm short for one 8pin in my pack. My PSU is Evga 750W G3. So, can i use 2x8 pin by CableMod and one original EVGA 8pin cable that i got with my PSU? Or, should i use only my original Evga cables for GPU. In that case, i can use one original Evga cable that splits into 2x8pin and one original Evga 8pin cable. What is better and safer option?

Is it safe to use just 2x8 pin on 3x8 pin GPU? Guess not?

One more, can i use 2x8pin CableMod and  1x6pin from SATA also CableMod to 3x8pin GPU? That's also a huge no no i guess?

Thanks,

Alen

You never want to mix cables across power supplies. I am not sure exactly how cable mod works though, are they set up with the same pinouts as your power supply? As in designed to specifically work with your power supply? If that is the case, mixing those cables is perfectly safe. But NEVER use a cable not specifically designed to work with your exact power supply.

Yes, its e-series for Evga PSUs.

I used it on 6700xt, no problems, but that card is 2x8pin. My new card is 3x8pin, so im one cable short. So i can use 2x8pin CableMod and one 8pin that came with ny PSU?

Assuming its the proper cable from CableMod, sure. Otherwise, there's no standard for how modular PSU cables are wired on the PSU end. The other end of the cable is standard, where the only exception to this is 12VHPWR, which is a true 1:1 cable per the spec.

Otherwise if you happen to use the wrong cable, first party or not, you run the risk of having a deadly (for the hardware) 12V to ground or such short that might take hardware with it. Where generally people won't recommend mixing any cables, where I'll generally recommend not using 3rd party cables for this reason unless you're 100% sure its the proper cable.

If it's an original cable that came with the PSU that's perfectly fine. You don't want to mix match other PSUs cables with different PSUs. As long as it's the one that came with the PSU originally it will be fine to use in conjunction with the cable mod cables.

With this information (Assuming you have already used these cables with your psu previously, unless I miss understood??) you can mix those cables just fine with no issues.

The CableMod E-series cables are specifically for EVAG PSUs -- I have a set for each of my EVGA units.

Yes, you can use the 2x CableMod cables, and then one of the original ones that came with the PSU.

Other than...the cables not looking all the same...and if that will annoy you 😆
