Is RTX 4070 worth it as a long period upgrade from GTX 1070 which I bought 7 years ago?

As you can tell I'm not one to buy a GPU every 1-2 years, I want one for the long run.

I've been gaming at 1080p60 , but this might change soon , not to 4K or crazy resolutions but maybe 1440p and a higher refresh rate.

AV1 encoding is a plus as use Sunshine+Moonlight alot for remote streaming and AV1 is already  being implemented as I write.

My only concern is the damn VRAM. 12GBs doesn't feel enough as a future proof product. it just seems to be the limit nowadays for new games with everything turned on. When you are at the limit suttters will follow.

AMD cards would be an option if it weren't for their price in my country. The cheapest 6800XT costs more than the cheapest RTX 4070. And there are no viable RDNA3 cards yet available in the price range (AV1 encoding is a must).

Should I hold on longer as maybe NVIDIA will launch refreshed SKU's with more VRAM? 2025 for RTX5000 series seems far away for them not to launch anything inbetween

You don't say what you are going to pay for it, so it's impossible to say if it is "worth" it. Is it a decent 1440p card? Sure.

about 600E.

it alot of money for "decent" and might stutter because of not enough VRAM

12GB will be enough at 1440p

But for a long lasting card OP may up the budget a bit to $800 so he can get a 7900XT or 4070ti

not willing to go higher.

it's a perverse price as it is.

as mentioned AMD cards are not an options as they cost way more than they should (an 7900xt costs as much as an RTX 4080 here).

4070ti has only 12GB too. I'd be insane to pay 800 for only 12GB

remember to press quote to get a response from someone. @Blue4130 @PDifolco

Assuming they sticked it at MSRP then its either 4070 or 6800XT, in which case yeah 4070 makes sense. But most market shift their price to clear stocks of old gens all the time, what region of europe is this?

Dunno where you live but in most of Eurozone the 7900xt costs around the same than a 4070ti and the 7900xtx 100eur less than a 4080...

no AV1 encoding=no purchase, as said.

I was off about the AMD parts 7900xt it's about 4070ti, but like 5-10% more expensive.

I really don't think AMD cards will be an option as they come at price premium here (Romania), are bad with RT and draw more power... still going to wait for 7800xt next week at gamescom to see if it brings something for the table.

I just noticed I have another problem...My mobo is B450, and I got two NVME ssds, one in the top m2 dedicated gen port, the other in an adapter in the PCIe that splits lanes with the GPU, making the primary PCIe GPU slot runs at 8x Gen3. there's no performance loss for GTX1070. not sure that will be the case for RTX4070 too

  • 2 weeks later...

It's worth it to me. I stick with 1080p for now but hope it can handle 1440p should I decide to upgrade my monitor. Maybe with upscaling at that point. Or just last as a 5+ year 1080p card.

Being able to turn up all the bells and whistles is satisfying especially with a so efficient card that it's whisper quiet and can fit my mITX case. So I'm very happy with it.

A very important thing to note. I made it very clear to myself that it was a luxury buy. That I shouldn't try to justify it being the rational choice in terms of price. It was the best for my usecase (ignoring price), I wanted it and I had the money. If you are concerned about buyers remorse due to price to performance or overall price, it's a much tougher question.

mITX is awesome! I regret nothing (apart from when picking parts or have to do maintainance *cough*cough*)

yeah...same thing all over again.

7800XT is a better option than RTX 4070, but in Romania the cheapest 7800XT is at best the same price as the cheapest 4070

Is the StarField bundle a factor in your calculations? Could tip the scale

shouldn't be.

as a fact , found one on a store that is closer to 4070TI price and no mention of Starfield 🤣

Doh. Check your e-tailers and see if some of them run the promotion. It's a nice price cut if you are going to buy the game anyway
