I'm looking at getting more into AI by getting a cuda enabled GPU. However, I'm worried that my systems PSU won't be able to handle it. Any thoughts?

PC Specs:

Processor: Ryzen 7600x

Motherboard: ASRock B650 PG Lightning

Memory: 32gb DDR5 Trident Z at 6000mhz using expo

Storage: 1tb NVME + 512 gb NVME

GPU: Radeon 6650xt

Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 850W 80+ Gold

I want to throw a 250watt Tesla M40 (12gb version) in my system. They wouldn't ever run at the same time at max capacity but I'm still worried that it'll be a little to much draw.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

That'd be fine, no need to worry. The 6650xt is a 200w GPU, with everything running full tilt (including both GPUs) you shouldn't be getting past 700W.

OTOH, be aware that the M40 is really slow for today's standards, you'd be better with a 2060 Super, 2060 12gb or a 3060.

No issues at all when running one card at a time. My 3080 only draws 26 watts when on the desktop and only kicks in a higher power draw when I launch a game.

With web browsing at times the GPU hit 29watts but power draw is really quite low outside of games.

Running your 250watt Tesla M40 (12gb version) for the Cuda is not going to mess things up at all.

you should be able to run your monitor from the main GPU and use Nvidea control panel to select the Cuda Cores on the Tesla for your AI work etc.

Ya, I thought about getting one of those but I can get an m40 for $30 off of eBay where as a 2060 is significantly more and I'm really just getting started. I appreciate the feedback though!

Awesome, that's great to hear! Thanks for the info. Just one more quick question. I've heard that the M40 uses a CPU connector rather than a pcie connector. Will I need an pcie to eps power connector for my power supply?

If so, which one would I connect it to since my power supply says CPU/PCI-E.

Thats why they're cheap, they're bog slow. 2060 is the minimum for Pytorch, you better off going for openCL and run it off your 6650XT instead of burning 120 piece chicken McNuggets worth of money and increase your power bill.

Welp, can't beat it for this price, good luck!

They're not that bad, specially for someone who's getting started. Should be on the same level of a 1070, and that's more than enough for learning stuff until you get a grasp of what you actually need. I also believe that, while the 6650xt is more powerful, it'll give more headaches for someone who's just learning.

Should be better than colab too.

Haha you make a really good point! Although, the M40 isn't out of the minimum requirements for pytorch.

Ya I've actually tried to get it working on my Radeon GPU but.... I ran out of time and pretty much gave up and moved to processing on my CPU which.... I haven't done much with since it's so much slower.

Yeah fair enough. Theyre abundant but PITA to set up.
