Recover files from an unalocated drive

My brother messed up his drive and all of the data is gone and the entire drive partition is unallocated. I have found a free data recovery software called recuva that seems to work, the problem is that the drive does not have a file name because it is unpartitioned. If i partition the drive and give it a drive letter, will the data still be recoverable? Also if there are any other free data recovery software tools that you know of please tell me. Alternatively if there is any other way to recover the data i would also like to know.
