I decided to replace the thermal paste in my 10-year-old lenovo prebuilt (mobo serial number CIH81M). When it was time to turn it on, it wouldn't post. Everything is connected and the motherboard seems to get power. The cpu cooler is also properly mounted. Help please!

A motherboard would not post if the CPU Fan header is not connected. Could you check to see if the fan header is fully seated? It might help to unseat and reseat the header a couple of times to ensure proper connection.

This might be a stretch, but do you perhaps have a Buzzer hanging around? It might help single out the specific issue you're encountering

Try reseating the cpu and making sure you pull the lever. If that doesnt work idk if everything is at its place and its firm yeah somehow you might have fried the cpu unfortunattely but thats the worst case scenario

I don't really think thats a major possibility. I'd like to refrain from scaring people with worst case scenario speak, unless using it for comedic effect, if you may do the same.

Okay so i reseated the cpu and the heatsink but still doesn't post. Is it dead?

I wouldn't like to necessarily say that.

This might be a hunch but could you unplug your CMOS battery for 5 minutes?

Before tossing the entire system out, if i recall Lenovo desktops like to stay in their own ecosystem, while you're definitely not under warranty, it'd be best to contact Lenovo Support before you toss the entire system away.
