I was wondering would it be possible to just use a laptop upgrade migrating kit on my desktop to save time. I am going to be buying an EVO 500GB soon and replacing my 2 500GB hDD's which one of them is making stranger noises now and then. My performance has also gone down which is probably a bad thing. Anyway would it be possible to use these kits or would it just me easier to reinstall Windows 7 from a Windows 7 OEM disk I have lying around. Start from scratch and use my backup to put all my old files on.

I would start from scratch. It's always better. Rather than migrating a system.

How would I go about doing that. Is it even possible to install Windows 7 from an OEM disk after it's been used. Or would I have to go about finding a new copy of W7.

The disk doesn't bind to the key. The key only binds to the motherboard. You'll be fine.

Yeah but it's a copy my brother used but he has Ubuntu now. So would that disk still work or not. This is the first time I have ever needed to deal with this type of thing as I have always just upgraded to a new OS and started from scratch but because W8 is utter shit I don't see the point in upgrading.

Ok thanks. I will probably just do a migration instead then.

Oh yea one other thing could I just use a Windows image to reinstall W7 from a clean installation. So remove my HDD, plug in my SSD and boot from my backup image. Could I do it that way or not.

Yes you can, just call microsoft and tell them you upgraded your pc to a different motherboard and cpu and they will let the key register to the new components. They know there's a lot of enthusiasts out there and will work with you

That sounds like a pain. Why is there no easy way of migrating your HDD Raid0 to a single SSD. There really needs to be a better way. I am considering just buying a new copy of Windows 7 and doing it that way.

I found a tutorial that lets you create a new W7 installation disk. You need to download the Home Premium 64-bit iso and you need the Windows 7 USB DVD Download tool. Could I use this to create a new W7 installation and then use my existing W7 code after going to the new SSD. After that I would copy all my old files onto my new SSD and then install all my programs again. Would that work. Instead of using the OEM disk which wouldn't work. I have also found another way of cloning the drive to the SSD but that would require shrinking the partition to 300GB which isn't doable on a 1TB Road 0 array made from 500GB HDD's.

I hope W9 is better in this department and just allows you to easily transfer your old Raid array to a single storage device. It needs to be done. Also why are W7 copies so expensive.

I am back to my last suggestion of should I just buy the Samsung Evo 500GB with the notebook upgrade kit. If I used this would it actually work or not. If that doesn't work I guess I will just buy W7 again.

I just migrated my Windows 8 from a HDD to a SSD. After a little trouble with running the migration software, Windows is now on the SSD and it is really fast without reinstalling. The good thing was, that the Samsung Software is easy to use.

Do all their SSD's come with the software or do you have to buy a specific model. I want to get the Samsung Evo 500GB. Also did you have a RAID0 array before you went to the SSD or was it just a single drive.

All Samsung SSDs (Basic, Desktop, Laptop Edition) can be used with the software. You have to download it from their Website.

The Software works, but just copies the C Volume onto the SSD, But you can later resize that Volume in the Windows Hard Drive Utility. Connecting the SSD to a Sata port will work, that is how I did it, because  I got the "Basic" model, which only includes the SSD. And for installing the SSD, I used some 5 mm thick double sided tape and put it in the bottom of the drive cage. :D

SSd's are nice that way. I will probably just throw it in the back of my case. I have a 540 Air so there is plenty of room. I will probably cover the bottom of the hardware area with some black plastic and remove the HDD runners. Does the C Drive incude the boot programs so you can actually boot into Windows or will I have to do something with the WinRe partition.

C will have all files to boot. There is no Restore Partition on my drive, but you can make one, I just don't remember how.
