Check the laptop's cooling vents, it might have collected dust over time, so some cleaning and possibly change of thermal past might help. Cooling pads don't really help that much, especially if cool air can't get into the laptop's internals to cool GPU/CPU.
A cooling pad only helps if the laptop is regularly on a surface that blocks airflow. If it's on a flat surface like a desk, it is pointless to use one.
If it's possible, maybe the thermal paste needs to be replaced. Otherwise, beyond simply blowing out dust, there aren't any options.
