Want to Upgrade GPU to RTX 3060 12GB but it only has a 6-pin for a gpu and it's 450w.

Fitzy

My pc has these specs:

Cpu: i7-7700

Gpu: GTX 1050 TI

450w ACBel PSU

8gb ram

1tb hdd.

I worried on replacing the PSU since this is a prebuilt from Lenovo and idk what the size psu it will fit inside the case.

I have a spec sheet that you could look at and tell me if i need to replace the psu which will be a hassle and i know that a 6-pin won't work with an 3060

With these specs a 450w psu should be fine with a 3060

My 3060 never breaks 170w power draw even during furmark

Think you can get a 6 to 8pin adapter

Wattage will be ok, check the PSU 12V rail power but it shoudl be enough anyway

in my opinion you would benefit much much more from first upgrading to indeed more ram a new motherboard a new cpu and new psu and getting nvme or just regular ssd. then buying a new gpu

Ram for sure but that cpu should be fine to power a 3060 12gb

That'll be fine but defo upgrade to 16gb of ram first. You could also go platform upgrade but it would cost bit more

Also have you considered the 6650 xt or the rx 6700?

to me it seems his whole pc is kinda ancient for modern day gaming. if hes already planning on getting ddr4 3200 16gb he has to upgrade the mobo anyway due to max memory speed allowed as he has a Intel B250 mobo / i7 7700. it would be better for his pc in my opinion (its his decision and money ofc) to upgrade the pc first before slotting in a better gpu.

But at least they have the speed for later on when they do a platform upgrade. Also ram is dirt cheap now 3200 CL16 about 30 bucks so wouldn't make sense to go for slower ddr4 even if it was a bit cheaper

450w ACBel PSU

Send a pic of the wattage table

Rated wattage is meaningless if the 12v rail is stupid underpowered

Btw dont buy new when you can buy a far superior used 6700xt around 200-250$ on classifieds sites like fb marketplace, all you gotta do is just detune it to fit your psu wattage since the cpu will be a pretty major bottleneck unless you crank the graphics settings, though the 6700xt is a 200-250w card at stock

that is true, but to me it just wouldnt make sense to get a 3060 on such old hardware. even if he added in a new 16gb 3200 kit that would run at 2400 i believe or an nvme drive. yeah the 7700 wouldnt hold it back that much compared to lets say your 5600 maybe an average of 20 fps lower. but he would have to update his pc anyway sooner or later with upcoming games being more and more cpu intensive making a 4c8t not really ideal. meaning in my opinion it would be better for him to first make his pc up to date and modern/smooth with a updated motherboard that can run at such ram speeds an 650w psu and a better cpu like your 5600x for example. and ssd/nvme before going to a different gpu.

unless he does not play new aaa titles or demanding indie/aa titles. but then he wouldnt need a 3060 either.

I'll get a 6700xt and try to upgrade mobo, but idk what size the mobo i have and i want to keep the case that i'm using right now.

Should i change my case for eg. better airflow (my case has good airflow)etc.

What tasks do you use this PC for?  What resolution and framerate are your monitor?

If you're trying to get high framerates for a game, and the CPU is the bottleneck, buying a new GPU won't help.

And, at some point, if you're going to upgrade several parts, maybe you should save up and build a new PC.

PC Build: R5-1600.  Scythe Mugen 5.  GTX 1060.  120 GB SSD.  1 TB HDD.  FDD Mini C.  8 GB RAM (3000 MHz).  Be Quiet Pure Wings 2.  Capstone-550.  Deepcool 350 RGB.

Peripherals: Qisan Magicforce (80%) w/ Gateron Blues.  Razer Naga Chroma.  Lenovo 24" 1440p IPS.  PS4 Controller.

Audio: Focusrite (Solo, 2nd), SM57, Triton Fethead, AKG c214, Sennheiser HD598's, ATH-M50x, AKG K240, Novation Launchkey

Wishlist: MP S-87, iPad, Yamaha HS5's, more storage
