Hi my wireless connection for my desktop is dismal (isp seem to have made it worse) it is only 6 down and 4 up, I was wondering if I should get a wireless extender like http://goo.gl/6O64QK or get another wireless adapter.

Notee before suggesting I can not connect my desktop to the  router do to it being in my room so please do not suggest that.

I would go with (maybe) a new router and a new wireless adapter. Adding extenders, switches, adapters, etc is just adding another 'middle man' to the mix, and also another point in the network that could add other problems. It would be just another device that you have to worry about, as apposed to getting a better 'Point A to Point B' setup - which is as I mentioned, a better Router + Wireless Adapter combo.

Sounds good I'll try a new wireless card, probably one from intel as those are apparently very reliable.

Yes, Intel's are very reliable. There are other good ones, however. Just find one that works for you. Changing out the Router and/or Adapter could make a night & day difference, depending on your current ones.

Too many variables to give reasonable advice.

- Are you sure the problem is WiFi and not your internet connection? Test it.

- Have you checked to see if you are picking the best channel? Download a tool like WiFi Analyzer

- Is the problem range? How good is your wiring? What sort of walls do you have? Consider powerline

- Check the router, is it in the best position? Consider placing it higher or avoiding metal barriers

- What wireless standard are you using? N150? N300? N600?

- Is the problem router end or adapter end? Try different devices to see what they give you

Fools think they know everything, experts know they know nothing

- Wireless extenders can be flaky and most of them only have one antenna and therefore rebroadcast at the same frequency so they introduce noise.

- powerline is in my experience worse.

I wouldn't be surprised if its just your router (if its not great).. setup your pc right next to it just temporarily and see what speeds you get..

I would consider an access point and locating it somewhere closer to your pc.. additionally a better wireless card always helps
