well i currently am building a media / starbound local server and to cut cost i thought going with a celeron would be best (lga1200) but someone from the ltt forum here recommends at least a i3. ok good but used i3 lga1200 cost used as much as some i5 Only IF they have a igpu. i3 without the igpu are dirty really dirty cheap used so my question is are there ANY dGpus that are so low in tdp that they would be a viable alternative for a non f igpu cpu ? performance ist not important as long as its at least as strong as a igpu. tdp and ultra cheap price is king for this project. any recommends ?

The RX550. I had one as an emergency GPU for (low settings 720p) gaming while my more powerful card were under repair. In my case, it consumes like 35-40W tops. And since you're running a Starbound server, the RX550's performance should be enough.

Otherwise there's also the NVIDIA equivalent, the GT1030.

No, a dGPU is always a lot less efficient than an iGPU.  The really low power ones are usually weaker than a modern iGPU.

ASUS B650E-F GAMING WIFI + R7 7800X3D + 2x Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30-36-36-76  + ASUS RTX 4090 TUF Gaming OC

WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz) WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz)
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~1200Mbit down, 115Mbit up, variable)

what do you consider modern igpu ?

also do you think low tdp gpus will perf worse with a low power target vs a igpu ?

The best you'll likely find right now is the RTX 3050. It's got 8GBs of VRAM, which will be great for transcoding HDR, 4K, and so on. It also has a total board power of around 130 watts. That's probably the sweet spot, right now. Though if you go back a generation or two, take a look at the GTX 1650. It'll handle things like Plex really well, but still has a total board power of 75w. Better, but still not great. I'd honestly stick with the integrated graphics.

Oh, whatever you do, avoid AMD. In theory their cards should perform really well for this use-case. Though, they have nothing that really competes with Intel's Quicksync, or Nvidias Nvanc. Genuinely stick with Intel, or if buying a card, Nvidia.

do you know of someone that tested dgpus (your 1650 for example) at a lower power target and see how they perform ? would be interresting to watch

Generally speaking if you just need display out, iGPU is better than dGPU. They are more efficient too, given no need to have another set of power delivery. Better for troubleshooting too

the problem for me is that a i3 with an igpu costs used here around same as much an identical i3 F and a 1050ti/1650 combined. thats why i think of maybe getting a i3 F and a low power gpu instead of just a cpu with an igpu.

1050ti/1650 is way more powerful than any dGPU. Well Ryzen RDNA2 based are quite close but still.

If you are chasing lowest wattage, then iGPU for sure.

If you pay anything for power, you're likely to easily burn the difference in power.

You already have an LGA1200 board or not? If not id just go for AM4 board with 5600G instead.

If this is just going to be media server, id ABSOLUTELY go for the igpu i3. RX 550 on H.264 is utterly atrocious while GT1030 has no hardware video encoding and decoding support at all, and all of that at worse total power draw than just the i3 integrated graphics. Quick Sync Video is insanely good at H.264 encode and decode at 4K and shouldnt be underestimated.

media ultra light gaming hybrid

mainly dvd playback and some old "dvd quality" vid files using vlc.

gaming starbound/minecraft server (starbound modding support server) anno 1503/1602 stronghold and other really old games that normally dont nees any gpu.

also next week i can get locally a used rx550 for just 20 bucks

Then really more point that you should get an igpu really, i know older Anno runs on potato chips nowadays. If you do need a GPU for encodes, then consider running atleast up to GTX 1650 Super to get the Turing NVENC encoder.
