If we couldn't do this at the very least then star citizen would not be worthy of the title "space sim"

Of course we should be able to drift in different directions. Todays spacecraft can already do that :P

Not hard to drift when there isn't gravity and you have thrusters that can push you sideways

Thrusters! that's the word i was looking for... I was going to write something similar but i couldn't for the life of me remember what the hell thrusters were called in english...

You wouldn't need the thrusters... And there is gravity (If you're anywhere near a planet).

That's called geostationary orbiting.

Drifting round a space station would a good way of staying on target when attacking something like a space station
