I recently discovered that I have never been running my ram to its XMP speed. I have 2 sticks of Vengeance 8gb 3600Mhz ram. When I go to enable XMP in bios, the PC takes a minute to boot up, but as it's booting up, I hear three beeps, which from what I've seen is a memory error. It takes a few more seconds to boot up, and then it boots up to Windows with one beep. If I go look in task manager, it tells me my ram speed is only at 2133 Mhz. I am just confused why enabling XMP gives me a memory error--which I assume is the problem--. If I restart and go back to bios, it will still say XMP is enabled, but will not show the correct speed in task manager.

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900x

Motherboard: GIGABYTE Aorus Elite b550 ax v2

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x8gb 3600Mhz

Thanks,

Which motherboard? Which bios version?

First things first, don't trust Task Manager, it isn't super reliable with reporting frequency. It's usually pretty good with everything after Skylake as long as you aren't using BCLK, but it's still not infallible. Check using CPU-Z or HWInfo instead, those are much more reliable about reporting memory frequency. Given the whole boot error you're experiencing though, it does sound like the system is turning on in safe mode and that's why you're getting such an error. Also, part numbers for the RAM and motherboard are also needed for a more specific answer.

XMP isn't perfect, far from it actually. 2x8GB 3600 usually just works, but it's not guaranteed. There's a couple of things you can try to get it to work at better settings:

  1. Double check that you aren't just running into board issues. If you're on an X570/B550 board, you should be able to reliably hit 4400+ in desynced mode, while on some B450 boards 3600 can sometimes be a struggle if you have a weak IMC or sticks without a very well supported IC, and it's even worse odds with B350/X370.
  2. Double check that your RAM is in the right memory slots. Slots 2 and 4 are on the vast majority of motherboards the optimal memory slots for RAM overclocking, so if your RAM is not in those slots you are likely to have some issues getting 3600 to work.
  3. Check a couple BIOS revisions. It's possible that you're on a BIOS revision that has broken memory support, at least for your particular memory IC. It's not that uncommon on AMD motherboards, there are BIOS revisions for both my X570 Taichi and X570 Master that will not POST 3600 CL14 even on kits rated for them, while it's fully functional on others. Update/roll back to a different version or two to see what's the best, and remember that newest =/= best.
  4. Try entering the XMP parameters manually. Corsair DIMMs in particular are somewhat known to have issues working at XMP with AMD CPUs, so not using the XMP and instead entering the frequency, voltage, and timings manually can help.

Updated it so it has the ram model number

Okay, so new problem now. My ram was installed wrong and I had them in the 1st and 3rd slot, instead of 2nd and 4th. I installed it correctly now and now I can’t even get my pc to boot. I press the power button and my fans light up, and spin quietly. No beeps.

That isn't the model number, we do need the full model to get the timings and other factors about the sticks.

Do a Clear CMOS and see if that helps.

Found the problem, my ram sticks were in slot 1 and 3 instead of 2 and 4, thanks for the help 🙂
