Question: Random Full Shutdowns While Playing Games?

Go to solution Solved by Duzty,

could be either PSU (that is my best guess) or GPU.

Check the temps, also you could check the Windows logs for errors. They are usually very general errors but could point you into the right direction.

Update drivers.

But like many have mentioned. When pcs randomly shut down, its usually a PSU problem. I had the same issue because i put a cheap 650W bronze EVGA PSU with my 1800x and 1070ti back in the day and it would crash only when playing games.

changed the PSU to a better 750w evga supernova and it solved my problem.

hope it helps!

Hello! I had a question for you guys.

I have a second hand PC I bought off of someone a year back. Recap: I have a 240hz monitor at 1080p (rarely actually set it to 240). I was playing Black Ops II for crying out loud and halfway through the mission my whole computer reboots. Full shutdown to motherboard splash screen and back. Same thing happened when I was playing Blade and Sorcery, it just kills itself pretty much. I know some things about PC's, but not sure how to diagnose fix the computer shutting itself off. Here are the specs breakdown:

  • AMD Ryzen 5 1600X

  • Nvidia GTX 1070-Ti

  • Samsung 860 Evo 250GB SSD

  • Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000 2x8GB

  • Asus PRIME B350-PLUS motherboard

  • 16gb RAM (2x8gb sticks)
  • Corsair liquid CPU cooler
  • KINGWIN MK-650w PSU (appears to be a 10 year old power supply from a quick search)
r/pcmasterrace - Question: Random Full Shutdowns While Playing Games?

The guy that built it used a huge case with fans on the front and back.

Any and all suggestions are VERY MUCH appreciated!

I will check them later tonight and update the thread.

I have and they don't seem too out of the ordinary, being as I didn't build this PC I have no idea how everything was set up. Pretty frustrating!

That doesn't really help 😄 .  I want the model number / name of the PSU, hard to see on the picture.  Thank you.
If you are able to get it while near you computer that would be excellent.

No worries mate. I check the forums very often, take your time 🙂   There is a chance the PSU could be at fault if its a bad unit, so I just want to check what type it is.

I also saw that it is a water cooled cpu cooler as well, but I have never touched it or any of that loop.

Dumb question number 2: Do you/should you maintain water cooled CPU blocks?

The water cooler in your system is whats called an AIO ( All In One ) and they are closed loops that do not require maintenance.  AIO's do have more failure points than a normal Aircooler as the Pump can fail, the loop can clog up due to the contents of the liquid inside etc. An overheating system may also shut down so give us an update on the temperatures when you get home. When gaming you can also touch the tubes coming out of the pump to feel if they are warm, if not then the liquid inside is not circulating.

When you can buy a used unit for $20 on eBay, you know it’s quality! /s

So I guess a follow up is how many watts do I need to get? How would you even find that out? Appreciate the help!

I would definitely change that PSU. Even if its not the problem, i would change it out.

What wattage power supply should I look for? From what you guys are saying it sound like the current one is underpowered, old, or probably both?

650w is good enough. its just that some PSU are lower quality, not stable, inconsistent power delivery, they may be rated at 650w but can only handle 400w etc... look up reviews and see what would work for your budget.

Hello everyone!

I decided to just replace the power supply as that was most likely the culprit. I went out and bought a Corsair RM750e and an RTX 3060 Ti since I was out. Put both through their paces in Black Ops III Solo Zombies (not online, apparently IP's are being leaked still) Got to round 20 with no crashes or stutters. You guys were a huge help and I cannot thank you enough! Minecraft RTX also looks dope, no crashes either under moderate load testing it in ray tracing and non RTX environments.

PS: Unwiring an old PSU and rewiring a fully modular PSU is no joke! Got it in the first try though 😎
