PC Build Plan Review for Friend (New Streamer)

Sadly yeah. AMD VCN is only good with the AV1 support that RX 7000 series shows and that's really more credit to AV1 being an insanely efficient video encoding protocol than AMD video encoder design. On H.264 which Twitch uses right now, they easily got their ass handed in quality. Although Intel Quick Sync Video in the integrated graphics of Intel CPU is a bit cheaper and the quality is indeed better than AMD's. But that means you have to use OBS for the most part because Intel doesn't have a built in screen recording software. If they're into Nvidia software suite its going to be a hard negotiation to clear.

Since that's the case, I guess we'll go for the 4070 for the $100 more.

15 hours ago, SorryClaire said:

Since it's not a significant difference, and with the build I have currently selected being at $2000 exact, I think I'll stick with the 12700KF. I can't see 5% being worth the extra $100 dollars.

Here is the final parts list I have compiled thanks to everyone's suggestions. I will probably order everything today since several sales for the parts end in about 14hr.

The build is for a friend and I am willing to go Intel, I just have more knowledge/experience with AMD CPUs. For the monitors, since he will also be using it to do accounting work, I figured larger monitors would be better, and 1080p wouldn't look great at that screen size. Those were the cheapest 1440p monitors I could find over 120Hz.

Just need opinions on possible alternative components or if this is a good build.

@FaTaLMercenery I see a couple of red flags in your build. Streaming with 16GB of RAM is one, and streaming with a 6 core cpu is another. The frame rates are going to take a beating no matter what if you're streaming from the same PC that you're gaming on hence the reason I would seriously look at 1080P if you play first person shooter games. You want 32GB of RAM and more cores.  Use Nvidia's NVENC with OBS for a decent streaming experience.  Here's a case with better airflow (2x140mm intake fans + 1x120mm exhaust fan), an i7 cpu, faster SSD and 32GB of RAM.

@SorryClaire

2x monitors are something he specifically requested for his setup since he plans to do streaming(have the game open on one monitor and discord/obs/whatever else on the other) and also work(he's an accountant). I will ask him about in-ear, but I am going to assume he would prefer over-ear headphones. Assuming TKL means tenkeyless, that is also not optional since it is important for his work. I assume he will probably be using OBS.

I personally am very against second-hand stuff, especially electronics, but I will ask my friend if he is ok with it though. I also see that you selected DDR4, is there any reason for that other than to bring the cost down? Will that impact performance in any significant way? Also, I don't know the PSU brand, FSP Group; is that a reputable brand?

@Why_Me

I appreciate the thoroughness of your response and I do like the part list you made, I just have some questions.

  1. In the Average FPS chart, it shows the RTX 4070 and the Radeon 6800 XT to be basically equal, does the NVENC encoder really warrant the extra $100(I have zero personal experience recording/streaming)?
  2. I don't know the PSU brand, FSP Group; is that a reputable brand?
  3. Is there any significant performance difference between the 12700KF and 13700F?
  4. If you had to choose between the 13700F + 6800XT vs 12700KF + 4070, which would you recommend?

I see in your list you only have one monitor, so I need to factor in the additional cost for that, but I found a 1080p Acer monitor that is $120 which should still work for him. I am going to get them through Amazon and tell him that if he ends up wanting a bigger or higher-resolution monitor, he can return it and get something better.

Here is the updated list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WWyQFg

ddr4 to cut costs, no reason to go ddr5 unless you are forced to, and besides you wait a few years and ddr5 will have much better ics and much better standard speeds not the lousy 6000-6400 that xmp can reliably work at (past this speed xmp is very unlikely to work even if there are 8000 kits), performance wise not really, youll be bottlenecked by the gpu anyways

Fsp is a very reputable oem brand, but you should throw away that branding mindset cause obviously every brand has made a bad product, if youd like to know if branding matters or not you have to look at what part you are actually buying and what a specific brand will give you over the other, on rams branding is completely irrelevant same goes for ssds as the components are made by the same few manufacturers, for psus i think branding only matters for warranty otheriwse its also irrelevant and youll have to do your own research as to the quality of that particular psu

Used parts will always cut costs or get you better stuff in a noticable way on both gpus and psus. ex new will only get you a 680xt at 500$ but used will get you a 6900xt at 500$, or new will get you a shitty 750w bronze unit but used will get you an 850w gold unit. you can also cut costs on other stuff but thats kinda occasional (mobos, cpus, etc.), theres also buying used cases but i only reccomend that on very tight budgets cause you dont wanna throw 50$ down the drain on a 500$ budget and in my case over here in asia where i can get cheap airflow cases with 3 included rgb fans for 20$, used cases are quite literally irrelevant

Sadly yeah. AMD VCN is only good with the AV1 support that RX 7000 series shows and that's really more credit to AV1 being an insanely efficient video encoding protocol than AMD video encoder design. On H.264 which Twitch uses right now, they easily got their ass handed in quality. Very much. FSP have been making PSUs since forever for OEMs same as Seasonic and Super Flower, and their mid to high end lines are very reliable bunch. On the lower end though they really are cheap in build quality.

10% higher on productivity and 5% higher in 1080p gaming where CPU actually matters. Its not bad of an upgrade really.
