OLED (or just your favorite) monitor suggestions

I'm in the market for a new monitor and was wondering if anybody who has an OLED monitor or has used one has any suggestions. I don't have a ton of qualification besides being relatively high refresh with true hdr level brightness. Been thinking of just using an A90K as a monitor but I really don't need anything that large and I know proper oled monitors are starting to show up on the market. I'd appreciate any suggestions or insight. Honestly it doesn't even have to be oled I would be happy to save money, just a recommendation for a monitor with really great blacks and color accuracy.

I'm personally a big fan of OLED and have been since i got my first OLED TV in 2019. Not having to bother with pixel overdrive or backlight bleed is just such a game changer. Gaming on a 120Hz or 240Hz OLED simply feels amazing no matter what game you play and the added true HDR capabilities are a nice bonus.

 

There are 3 main form factors to consider when choosing between OLED displays:

 

27" 240Hz 1440p

34" 175Hz 1440p ultrawide

42" 120Hz 4K

 

The best 27" model is probably the Asus PG27AQDM due to it's much higher brightness and similar other specs to it's competitors. This one is the best overall choice imo. It's has the best balance of features and specs.

 

At 34" the best choice is the Dell Alienware AW3423DWF. All of the 34" OLED displays are pretty much the same, and this one is the cheapest. Ultrawide is very subjective though. Either you want it or you don't.

 

At 42" the LG C2 (actually a TV) is the best choice imo, as it offers very compelling value. It offers a great immersive gaming experience at the lowest price. Sometimes it was on sale for under $800. You may have to put up with some inconveniences that may need some workarounds as it's a TV.

 

I'm approaching a year of using the LG C2 42" and it's been amazing so far.

Below is some of my suggestion you can consider.

• 27" 2560x1440 16:9 aspect ratio Wide screen.
  • LG 27GR95QE - the cheapest for the moment.
  • ASUS PG27AQDM - the best so far, brighter than LG one but also the most expensive, currently most country had no stock for this.
  • Corsair Xeneon 27QHD240 OLED - another alternative than above, all using same LG OLED panel.
• 34" 3440x1440 21:9 aspect ratio Ultrawide screen.
  • Dell Alienware AW3423DW - this is not firmware upgradable but G-Sync with module and 175hz, but then hazzle to exchange until you get the good one with latest firmware, as earlier firmware had many issue.
  • Dell Alienware AW3423DWF - this is 165hz and G-Sync compatible only but due to this it is firmware upgradable and much cheaper.
  • Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 - this is 175hz but no G-Sync module and G-Sync compatible only and firmware upgradable. The most expensive.
• 42" 3840x2160 4K 16:9 aspect ratio Wide screen.
  • Asus ROG Swift OLED PG42UQ - this is matte surface, some may don't like it, but I prefer matte surface for monitor usage and I don't have issue on matte surface, I am considering taken this by this week. This is the one of the 2 available 42" OLED display I can get in my country, another is LG OLED Flex but the price is insanity even though it is fun to have curve or flat screen anytime.

  • Sony 42 A90K OLED - from review, this is brighter than LG OLED 42 C2.

  • LG OLED 42 C2 - the most value but this is a TV, they is some cons of using it as monitor, and you need to access service mode to disable Automatic Brightness Limiter and this is warranty void. Also you need to use some tools to work around the sleep to wake issue when used it as a monitor for PC.
  • LG OLED 42 C3 - same as C2 which is TV also, not many countries are selling it but Singapore already starts selling and I love it, too bad I stay beside Singapore - Malaysia, and bring-in over may face some high custom tax. Currently it cost SGD $2,209.00
  • 
• 49" 5120x1440 32:9 aspect ratio Super Ultrawide screen.
  • Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 - if you want something extraordinary, this is the longest screen and the only OLED panel.
  • ASUS ROG PG49WCD - just announced.

Thanks for the comprehensive lists. I'll probably pick up the  C2 or A90K. I'm currently using ultra wide and I love it but sometimes I miss some of that vertical height and I think I'll find a larger screen to have most of the same benefits and  be even better for productivity.

I am using OLED (C2 42) but I am honestly not that big of a fan of OLED, unlike most people here. I found the LED advantage over LCD is too small to make a different without a size by size comparison (other in a specific HDR game) yet they post a significant longevity risk, and if you are getting a TV, they could also come with other drawbacks that compromise your experience.

 

That said, if you display is strictly for media consumption, there's no LCD equivalent that can rival OLED today in the combination of HDR and motion clarity, and especially motion clarity across multiple colours and refresh rate. There are LCD that can beat OLED in one area or the others but none can do it all like OLED.

 

If you don't use your display for work, and you care about motion quality and image quality (especially in dark scens), OLED is a no brainer especially for something like C2 42 that can be found for dirt cheap and have extensive warranty coverage for burn-in

I mean I did say I would take a real monitor over TV any day but probably not with that insane price (that roughly 3 times the cost of my C2), well guess you have fun with your purchase. And I thought you've already sworn off OLED with the whole dead pixel things from last time

I had no choice, my country no company bringing in 42" OLED TV, this included C2 and A90K. Every size is available for OLED TV but not the 42".

Another reason I don't want hassle with TV issue use as monitor, also I much prefer matte surface for monitor usage.

 

They are only 2 option availability - this Asus 42PGUQ or LG OLED Flex (RM13,199.00).

 

The dead pixel did not sworn off me. I still want OLED.

It is not only LG, all brand did not bring in 42" OLED TV. 

 

I also found it weird. I check with few shop, they also no idea. 

 

Harvey Norman staff actually told me many people ask for 42" and they also feedback, but still never have 42" OLED.

Yup. Panasonic don't have even 48".

Only LG and Sony have. 

 

LG only bring in that very expensive LG OLED Flex.

I was actually invited to work in Malaysia last year, planned to leave my FV43U at home and picked up C2 42 when I arrived at the country for my new apartment

 

Glad that I didn't end up going through with it

Basically yes, except I didn't know Asus had limit so many adjustment on HDR. 

 

Also the text clarity is like 30% worst than RGB arrangement LCD. After some clear type adjustment, now look much better. 

 

Still in fine tune. Probably tonight will do a short review.  

 

The visual quality wise is great awesome as expected. I don't see mine got washed out issue on HDR, I think Asus solved it, my firmware is V037 which much higher than Asus provided in their website which is V033, weird why Asus did not provide the latest firmware in their website.

I change one statement one - they are No text issue when using Display Port 1.4 connection to Windows 11, sharp and clear and I cannot see text fringing issue, but bad text fringing when using HDMI 2.1 connection for Windows 11. 

 

But no text fringing issue when connected to my MacBook Pro 14" (2013) using HDMI 2.1, I think we'll not have issue on macOS as if not wrong they are not using RGB pixel alignment. 

 

I find HDMI 2.1 got many issue, it is problematic in this PG42UQ, Neo G8 and also Neo G9. I am using RTX 3080 by the way.

Actually, this monitor got some issues but lucky all can be solved when using DP 1.4

I will write out the issues in my review later.
