Having trouble installing Ubuntu

I'm trying to dual boot Ubuntu Desktop and Windows 11. I'm having a problem with usbimager not seeing my external ssd, which I'm using in place of a flash drive because I don't have any empty ones or ones which I can empty. My best guess is that I'm either doing something wrong in the disk manager or maybe one just simply cannot use an ssd in place of a thumb drive in this situation?

Do you know what file system the SSD is using? Cause many times with Linux, if you're trying to use an NTFS formatted drive on it you won't see anything, with you needing to install NTFS-3g via the terminal.

 

Me personally though, I hate Ubuntu. I've tried using it a number of times this past year, and it's a broken piece of dogshit. For ubuntu based distributions I'd rather go with Zorin OS or Mint over Ubuntu.

Try Ventoy instead.
If you don't see the external ssd: Option -> Show All Devices ( Careful! You don't want to format the wrong drive, make sure your selection is correct).

After that you just copy paste the Linux live ISO to Ventoy formatted drive, reboot, boot from Ventoy, pick the ISO you'd like to run.

Exactly what issues does Ubuntu give you that other Ubuntu-based systems do not?

I recommend trying the following programs to writing an ISO file to storage:

 

fedora media writer (very simple, works with more than just fedora iso images)

 

balena etcher (similarly easy)

 

rufus (a cool program which is trying to help make better Windows iso files)

 

unetbootin (an old program that still works fine)

Subpar gaming performance compared to playing games on Fedora, or something Arch based is one thing.

 

As for bigger problems, I had an Ubuntu install that literally shit the bed just from me trying to install KDE. During the last time that I installed and attempted to use Ubuntu I decided to try out Gnome instead, but I was experiencing horrible visual bugs and issues. Almost like if my GPU was fucked (which it wasn't).

 

Also anytime I've installed it and have tried to remove some of the installed Snaps (such as Firefox) to either install the repo version or a Flatpak versions, something would flat out break and not work, even after reboots my system would be unstable after doing that.

 

Hell, there have even been times in the past year where I couldn't even get to install Ubuntu cause it would freeze up when trying to boot up the install USB.

 

I remember one of the Linux YouTubers out there doing a video on just how broken Ubuntu was for them, with them attempting to use it for one month, and just how broken that was for them.

It's a much cleaner experience to install a distribution that is set up with the DE you want, so you don't have basically double the programs, half of which you may not use.

 

Sometimes I do install other desktops, but I would rather have just kde, or I will add enlightenment or xfce if using cinnamon as it's the same toolkit.  I think it just adds too much to have both gnome and K desktop both installed, and adds too much clutter.

 

I encourage you to visit the Ubuntu forums and make a thread about each issue you experience, so that if others also have these bugs, they will get worked out.  Ubuntu has been around since 2004, and the goal is to make Linux as easy to use as possible.  I'd say that system76 is doing a fine job of making Pop_OS! easier to use than Ubuntu, and you may want to give that a try.

I have zero intentions of actually using Ubuntu. I've long since abandoned that idea. Most of the times I've installed it were just to see what it's like now, and if they've fixed their issues.

 

If I want something Ubuntu based, I'll stick with Mint or Zorin OS. Pop OS has good potential, but it's fallen so far behind many other distros, since System76 essentially abandoned updating it (aside from security updates) for the sake of having all their efforts poured into developing their Cosmic DE. I'm sure that once they're done with that, and after they bring PopOS up to date it'll be lit af, but as it stands right now it's kind of shit.

 

If I want something good and stable, I'll go with Fedora; and if I want something much more modern and bleeding edge, I'll stick to Arch based distros such as EndeavourOS or Garuda linux.
