It's a completely different architecture to x86, which is a base to most other chips. Itanium is meant for high performance servers and workstations.

It is server CPU made calloboration with HP and requires spesific software to run.

Itanium was initially manufactured by HP then Intel jumped on the band wagon. They're very good for database environments
