Liquid crystals get slower with lower temperatures. So yes, it's normal. Since VA is already slower in most cases, it's probably even more noticeable.

I noticed when I have the AC cranked to max cold (15-16c) Xiaomi UW 34” (which uses Samsung VA panel, I think) has significantly worse black level smearing. Last month we had a slight hot weather event locally and temperatures in the room went as high 38c and back then doing the same tasks as I am doing right now I was almost dead certain I tweaked the monitor to have little to no BLS.

 

Am I tripping? Is this a thing?

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Yeah I wasn’t expecting it be this noticeable. Reading about it now, it seems testing panels at obscene ambient temperatures (55-60c) is also a common thing among manufacturers to reduce response times and black level smearing so that on paper they look amazing (looking at you Samsung).
