My dad asked me to calculate the aproximate price of a PC for an acquaintance. That computer would be used for rendering (he said "Rhino software, which I assume is the Rhinoceros I found on google) and other somewhat heavy rendering with other softwares. There isn't a specific budget and the PC would be meant to do these tasks as best as possible and not be a "budget rendering machine" at all. So, without going too far (my country is expensive anyway, so don't even bother mentioning GTX titans).

What parts should I pick? The only thing I thought of so far was an Intel i7 4770 (non K since I'm 99% sure he won't overclock)

What motherboards should I consider? (Again, MOST likely not gonna overclock cpu)

How much ram?

Storage? (I thought of 2Tb HDD and a 128gb SSD maybe)

GPU? (R9 290X or GTX 780 or 780Ti, price wise, I'd say the best price/performance in my country is the 780)

PSU? (I'd say a good 650W like the XFX one in my pc should work, but still want everyone's opinion)

Case? (This is kind of not so important, but it should be a "somewhat professional looking" case, black and simple. (Maybe something Bitfenix since there's almost/none Corsair cases where I live).

Best OS choice?

Note: 1-  GPU brands would most likely be either Sapphire or Zotac as those are the cheapest here, EVGA is almost literally x2 the price of zotac (I think Zotac has a thing here and has less import taxes, no idea), so when thinking of GPUS, think of the gpu itself and ignore manufacturers.

2- since there's not a great variety of technology in my country, I'd appreciate if you could mention more than just one choice for everything, so in case one of them is impossible to find, I have other options as well.

3- as I said at the beginning, there's no exact budget, however, don't think of THE rendering machine with THE best components on earth.

What county is this?

Argentina. http://www.gameron.com.ar/index.php - http://www.mercadolibre.com.ar/  You could try to find stuff here to see the price. We use Argentine Pesos, which are basically a 1:10 exhange to USD. (1USD = around $10ARS)

Is the system just going to be used as a render node? What kind of content is being rendered?

What other software/renders are being used?

Budget?

Here's a ballz to the walls rendering system

CPU:http://www.gameron.com.ar/index.php?id_product=215&controller=product&id_lang=1

Motherboard: http://www.gameron.com.ar/index.php?id_product=208&controller=product&id_lang=1

RAM: http://www.gameron.com.ar/index.php?id_product=116&controller=product&id_lang=1

Placa de Video: http://www.gameron.com.ar/index.php?id_product=174&controller=product&id_lang=1

Case: http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/MLA-506124232-gabinete-corsaird-obsidian-series-350d-windowed-matx-itx-_JM

PSU: http://www.gameron.com.ar/index.php?id_product=251&controller=product&id_lang=1

Cooler: http://www.gameron.com.ar/index.php?id_product=240&controller=product&id_lang=1

SSD: http://www.gameron.com.ar/index.php?id_product=247&controller=product&id_lang=1

HDD: http://www.gameron.com.ar/index.php?id_product=61&controller=product&id_lang=1 x2

Total: $31529

Terrible value.

The 4930k + motherboard isn't that good for rendering performance for the money.

The graphics card would work fine with Rhino but it is likely a waste of money for such an expensive card depending on how something is being rendered or inappropriate for gpu-based rendering since robust opengl support that can be found on ws cards is preferred over more shaky raw horsepower.

The psu is major overkill. The current spec list would easily run off of a decent 550w.

The hdd + ssd combination is unnecessary. If the system is rendering off site as a node, little to no storage is actually needed. If it's being used as the sole rendering system, only a single fast drive would be needed.

Something along those line, this CPU is the same as an i7-4770 but no integrated graphics for a much better price...it has hyperthreading so its very good performance for rendering, modeling and gaming, ..of course the storage options, cases are at your discretion but the core parts should be something like this...if that cost too much, then i would suggest something based on an 8 core AMD FX cpu.

For GPU the radeon r9 290 might also be considered, 4gb of VRAM, maybe better for rendering and modeling.

I totally agree. Only problem is that there is little to no selection in Argentina
