Budget (including currency): 1300cad

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: games like fortnite, team sonic racing, and slime rancher

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/2NB2H2 i think i could cheap out on the psu but I think it is also worth it to buy a modular supply in case i wanted to change the cables and a psu with an additionsl eps connector in case i need more power.

i'm upgrading from an acer aspire e5 774g that has a 940mx and an i5 6200u

Dont ever cheap out on the PSU!  The RM650X you chose is a very high end PSU though, maybe you meant wattage instead of build quality?. Decent list, I would go for slightly faster RAM, 5600mhz CL36 or even DDR4 and a DDR4 supported motherboard. And you only need 1x8 pin EPS connector, its rated for 336w. The other one on the motherboard is basically for show / gimmick / extreme overclocking, realistically you won't be running insane OC's on this board anyways.

Don't get ddr5 for a budget build

I would go for this build instead

Surely a 6700 xt can be fit in here. Maybe go for a thermaltake Smart BM2 for psu and a deepcool cc560 as case. Not everyone needs 2tb too and 1tb should be fine (and an nv2 is 100 cad less)

So, last post for today i squeesed everything i can, if you really dont have the 5 CAD extra you can go for a cheaper ssd like the NV2

You mean a Kingston NV2?  Ya I'm not going down that road. I'll leave it up to the LTT regulars to butcher his build. I gave the OP a better and larger SSD, faster RAM, a better gpu, psu, case and cooler for under his budget.

wow thanks so much guys, you all are so talented i hope one day i can be this smart ":)" (had to put it in quotes or else ltt forum would change it to the emoji) i'm really grateful for all of these suggestions and i think that i might just stick with ddr5 because my motherboard and ram is the last thing i would probably upgrade after many years and i don't want it to be outdated really fast. i really like the idea of upgrading to a wd black ssd and upgrading the graphics card too so im gonna do some more research about that and update you guys on it.

Former, you have no choice. AM4 in of itself is a huge outliar in motherboard age, 2-3 years has always been the lifespan of a motherboard if you count from the CPU performance standpoint. And for the latter, RAM kits are going to continue to go down in price as it matures, you wont miss out.

Motherboard cycles in and out all the time, youre expecting around 2 generations, 3 tops for the most part. AM4 is an outliar in that it has 4 generations of CPU support from the first 300 series chipset to the 500. And even then certain 300 series chipset board has no interest in adding 5000 series CPU due to technical limitations or no demand.

Meanwhile for RAM, its pretty simple: as generation goes on, the price will go down to a point. DRAM manufacturing matures and yield increases, sometimes new tech gets introduced and gets cheaper like the current crop of high density DDR5 DRAM chips that makes 48GB on a single stick without any tricks like load reduction possible.

ahhhh ok, thank you. do you by any chance know if micro atx motherboards fit in a atx case?

Rule of thumb: count backwards. An ATX case supports the smaller motherboard size, but smaller cases doesnt support the bigger motherboard size. So if your case is classified as an mITX case, you cant fit an ATX motherboard.

To help you count backwards, here's every common motherboard size from the biggest to smallest.

  1. EATX (Extended ATX)
  2. ATX
  3. mATX (Micro ATX)
  4. mITX (Micro ITX)

super not enough wattage on the PSU. Ignore estimated wattage for the most part and crosscheck between what the GPU manufacturer recommends and the community recommends on the wattage. And besides, the 80 plus bronze and white EVGA aged like fine milk in build quality. Giving up DDR5 for DDR4 would afford us more on PSU... and everything else really. Trust me on Raptor Lake, DDR5 and DDR4 performance different doesnt matter at all in games.

i stuck with ddr5 because on amazon canada for some reason ddr4 is more expensive then ddr5.
